About us

Since 2004 Wingates has used design as a tool to create things that truly matter. Across three cities (Auckland, Hamilton & Tauranga), our multidisciplinary studios collaborate as one, reconciling ethics and aesthetics with commercial astuteness to deliver the best possible outcomes for our clients and their communities. Specialising in built design, workplace strategy, and interiors over a wide range of typologies, we stand out for being courageously human and aim to partner with people and organisations who share our passion for positively impacting life and landscape. Our team has grown to approx. 45pp and successfully provide design solutions across numerous workstreams including: • Workplace Strategy and Interior design • Commercial Architecture • Residential • Retail • Hospitality • Healthcare & Retirement Villages • Education • Large Format From large scale Workplace environments to residential homes and large-scale commercial, our philosophy remains the same: We believe that as an industry we can have a profound impact on lives and landscapes. That built environment plays an integral part in fostering healthy, resilient, and equitable communities. And to operate in the best interests of people, culture and the natural world is not just a choice, it’s our duty. Because we know that it is our very humanness – empathy, care, curiosity, and collaboration – that can help us enrich the cultural landscape of Aotearoa New Zealand. By observing and working together with our clients we are positive we will achieve this aim.

Wingates recently designed the new workplace for Trustpower's Generation business – Manawa Energy. Located at Levels 2 & 3 of the new NZ Blood Building at 93 Cameron Rd, Tauranga, this new 1600sqm workplace reflects the great outcomes and working practices Manawa Energy have developed and refined whilst being part of Trustpower. Transitioning their activity-based style of working to allow for current hybrid practices and new post-pandemic ways of working, our Design process included a strong focus on the acknowledgement of Te Ao Māori with design principles heavily influenced by the Tauranga Moana region. Our approach brought various stakeholders and iwi together- including 𝐍𝐠ā𝐭𝐢 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐮 & 𝐍𝐠ā𝐢 𝐓𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐫ā𝐰𝐚𝐡𝐨 - as well as the Base Building Architect and Developer. The name ‘Manawa’ meaning ‘heart’ was gifted by local hapu Ngāti Hangarau. It speaks to the heart of their operations, the Kaimai Power scheme; and is a nod to the shared whakapapa with Ngāti Hangarau to the Omanawa River. The name and brand story come from the heart of what they do and are deeply connected to the natural environment, their role as Kaitiaki and the importance of listening to the sounds of the environment to guide them into the future.  It’s these sentiments that the Wingates team have aspired to translate into a workplace environment that supports the wellbeing of Manawa’s staff and the work they do in providing renewable energy for our sustainable future. Their new environment seeks to demonstrate and embed the key Manawa Energy brand attributes. • 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 • 𝐊𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚 • 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 • 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐚, overlayed with a spirit of aspiration, ambition, and heart, whilst also providing a modern day and flexible working environment that acknowledges Manawa’s strong contribution to the region and the local community. This project is also a finalist in next month's Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Awards. 🥂 Sarah Bryant, James Davis, Xavier Apelinga, Shane Forward, David Wingate, Grace Wilson Well done to all the project team involved! iLine Construction, Kevin Marsh Director PPC Ltd SEG Ltd, Structure Design Ltd, Autex Acoustics New Zealand, Novii #taurangamoana #taurangacbd #wearewingates #architecture #interiordesign

We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of the MacMurray Medical Centre in Tauranga, a project designed with wellness and recovery at its core. Situated in a semi-industrial area, this facility blends seamlessly with its surroundings, featuring a mono-pitch roof wrapped in light metal cladding and complemented by soft landscaping. Inside, the design contrasts warm timber finishes with a durable exterior, creating a welcoming environment. The centre includes a spacious waiting area, four consult rooms, two state-of-the-art theatres, and dedicated recovery rooms. A key feature is the recovery room, which boasts a large window with planting to enhance the connection to nature and support patient recovery. High-level clerestory windows oriented to the south flood the building with natural light, adding volume and vibrancy to the space. A big thank you to everyone who contributed to bringing this vision to life. We look forward to seeing the positive impact the MacMurray Medical Centre will have on the Tauranga Moana community. #wingates #wearewingates #architecture #healthcare #tauranga #medicalfacility David Wingate Michael Carter Shane Forward Michelle Teutenberg Architect: Wingates Project Manager: The Building Intelligence Group Civil Engineer: Lysaght Consultants Structural Engineer: Lautrec Consulting Engineers Project Quantity Surveyor: Crowther & Company Ltd Main Contractor: Marra Construction (2004) Ltd 📸 JK Photography NZ

The Wingates team said a very fond farewell – one somewhat tinged with sadness - to our intern Oliver Rose today. Oliver came to us at the beginning of 2024 to undertake a working sandwich placement from his Architectural studies at the University of Bath in the UK. In six short but very rewarding months he rapidly established himself as an integral and extremely popular member of the Wingates whanau successfully working alongside all our sector teams from Commercial, Large Format through to Workplace interiors and our ever growing small project team. Oliver sat down with us prior to leaving to head back to Bath to reflect on his enjoyable stint working with Wingates and his overall experience of New Zealand. “𝑯𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒐𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒍𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒎 𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒙𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒆𝒏𝒋𝒐𝒚𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆. With this being the first place he has lived outside the UK, he has been able to quickly adapt even joining Ponsonby Rugby Club where he’s been playing half back. Adding regular surfing trips (even in our winter), and becoming a star of the Wingates Netball team, alongside trying to see as much of the country as possible in his spare time, has sharpened his intention to return in the not too distant future – even if he has overdosed on coffee and started using the odd NZ slang word 😊 Everyone in the Wingates team will miss his energy, can do attitude and positivity and we wish him all the best with his last few years at Bath. It’s been great having you here Oliver "𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐫ā." #wearewingates #architecture #design #social Naomi Bartlett Kelsey Black Xavier Apelinga Sarah Bryant Natasha Baumgartner David Maurice David Wingate Victor Chen Ornela Priotti Miguel Hernandez James Suter Troy Lu Elizabeth Mark Stephen Crook Jonathan Gibb David Joyce Michael Carter Michelle Teutenberg Shane Forward James Davis Ricky Tung Katie Marshall Manisha Rama

The Wingates teams from across the country came together yesterday to celebrate our 20-year milestone & belated Matariki Moment. Held at the Ōrākei Basin Silky Otter Cinemas, this was a fantastic opportunity to reflect on the past, appreciate the present and look forward to the future. With lighthearted snapshots of the team alongside showcasing some of the significant project work delivered, this was a valuable chance to recognise the importance of great people, design and innovation. Thank you to our guest speaker, Michael Holloway of Frequency for his insights into the value of experiences and also to Chris Wright of Baker Tilly Staples Rodway for an update on future professional growth. Fun times, fun team! #wearewingates, #wingates, #design, #architecture, #interiors, #creatingplacesthattrulymatter

𝑾𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒔 𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒔 𝑺𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒔 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒎 At Wingates we have always strongly believed in ensuring our Clients receive the best advice and design solutions possible. Over the past 20 years it’s this Client first approach that has ensured we have partnered in delivering many truly exceptional projects across NZ. This philosophy to ‘make things better’ has recently crystallised in the establishment of a 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 Business Unit that is dedicated to delivering the same quality of service, creativity, and innovation that our larger project client base has grown to expect over two decades. Led by our Design Manager Stephen Crook and supported by some of the best Designers, Architects and Project Consultants in the business - with the mantra of “𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞” - we can quickly assist our clients (existing and new) with requests that need a quick and cost-effective turnaround. Sometimes these projects are the genesis of a much larger plan or a ‘one-off’ request that requires agility, ingenuity, and a human response from a reliable and professional company. This is an exciting development for the Wingates team, and we are excited to announce its formation. For more information or to discuss any new requirements don’t hesitate to get in touch! We are incredibly proud and honoured to have won two Interior Architecture awards plus a Resene colour award at last night’s Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects Auckland Architecture Awards held at the Viaduct Events Centre. The Wingates workplace interiors team saw both our Greenwood Roche and Anthony Harper projects chosen as winners in the Interior Architecture section. We were delighted that both projects resonated with the judging panel and although sharing the same industry are two distinctly unique fit outs. It was an absolute pleasure to work with both clients and the respective project teams.
