Toi MAHARA – Public Architecture Award Winner Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects Wellington Architecture Awards “The reworking of the original Waikanae Library building, designed in 1976 by Gabites, Alington & Edmondson, transforms it into a home for the gallery and archive, creating a cultural cornerstone that anchors Mahara Place. A series of architectural interventions deliver a new identity and acknowledge the geographic and cultural location. Central to the scheme’s success is a series of flexible spaces within a compact footprint. Despite its modest size, versatility allows the gallery to operate as a dynamic hub. The renovation supports operational cost efficiency, recognising the importance of financial sustainability for a small organisation. This thoughtful redesign not only revitalises the gallery, but also anticipates the rejuvenation of Waikanae’s civic heart, positioning it as a catalyst for urban revival.” – Award Citation. Read more on Architecture Now & Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects: https://lnkd.in/gsibrJYQ! https://lnkd.in/g27g6uXz Beginning in 2018 as a design competition, we have been thrilled to see this design progress into completion and being enjoyed by the Waikanae community. Congratulations to our design team, clients and project partners! Additional congratulations are due to Crowe Construction & Associates for receiving a Gold Award for Toi MAHARA in the Built Tourism and Leisure category at the Master Builders New Zealand Commercial Project Awards which took place last Friday. Kaipātiki Project EcoHub – Public Architecture Award Winner Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects Auckland Architecture Awards “Evocative of the welcoming and democratic refuge of a sophisticated tramping hut, this red beacon serves as a flexible office, classroom and community gathering space. Nestled into a rich and plentiful landscape, the modest form belies the complexity of thought underpinning the design and construction, which incorporates five of the seven Living Building Challenge Petals. This treasured and thriving space speaks with authenticity to the environmental imperatives of the community it serves.” – Award Citation. You can read more on Architecture Now https://lnkd.in/gGDy8_WV Beginning in 2017 as a “Council Renewal” project to replace a 1970’s former kindergarten that the Kaipatiki Project had occupied for almost 20 years, it has been incredibly gratifying to design this purpose built community hub Environment Centre for anchor tenant the Kaipatiki Project. Massey Innovation Complex – Education Award Winner Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects Auckland Architecture Awards “Envisioned as a multi-disciplinary learning and research facility, this is the culmination of a long-term plan to relocate the Massey science community into purpose-built, state-of-the-art facilities. The strategically sited ‘Lab Box’ defines a new gateway and plaza. Following the existing contours of the campus, a strategy of internal and external terraces promotes connectivity within and to other buildings. Mass timber columns and floor and ceiling elements exude a warmth and tactile quality that permeates the circulation and collaborative zones. The philosophy of vertical integration is promoted with breakout areas incorporated into stairways and display windows to the laboratories, where steel and concrete were chosen for their control of vibration in these critical spaces. The result is a highly ambitious, successful and intensive programme in an energising and inspiring building.” – Award Citation. Ōwairaka House – Housing Award Winner Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects Auckland Architecture Awards "This is a response to the realities of multigenerational living, downsizing and the desire to stay connected to a beloved family property. Where the suburbs are increasingly intensifying, the client’s brief was for “neighbourly infill”. – Award Citation. Hayman Park Playground: Playtower & Kiosk - Planning & Urban Design Award Winner Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects Auckland Architecture Awards By Athfield Architects and Wraight + Associates Ltd We have been thrilled to see this project fully come to completion and being enjoyed by the Manukau community, from beginning as a design competition in 2010 Phase 1 was completed in 2019 and Phase 2 in 2023. Congratulations to our design team, clients and project partners! “Acting as an urban marker that’s visible from the city centre, the vertical arrangement is striking and inherently playful. At any one time it resembles a tower, a castle or a tree house. The parents’ stair winding up through the centre doesn’t dominate and the sense of adventure and opportunities to climb up the levels or cross between towers have been cleverly integrated. Safety and adventure are counterbalanced. The mix of colourful, tactile materials and the diverse scale of play elements in the tower and adjacent landscape offer accessibility to all ages.” – Award Citation.
