In the midst of the horrific war in Sudan, some good news: in the Eastern State of Gedaref, which hosts hundreds of thousands of IDPs, the total cultivated area for this season is estimated at 9.5m feddans, the largest in decades - thanks in part to farmers who migrated from conflict areas. In partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, UNDP Sudan is supporting 1,200 women on agricultural practices. In total this year UNDP has delivered 150 MT of seeds and agricultural equipment to farmers and agri-MSMEs to strengthen local food systems and reduce food insecurity.

On the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (#UNGA79) in New York, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) signed cooperation agreements to support new innovative projects that help meet growing humanitarian needs precipitated by the ongoing conflicts in Sudan and Yemen. UNDP Sudan thanks KSrelief for its critical partnership in supporting two projects in Sudan. One project is to help enhance access to water for 1.8 million vulnerable people in the states of Kassala and Gedaref, which have received high numbers of people displaced by the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The other project is to improve access to essential healthcare services to communities in Port Sudan by providing a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner to Port Sudan’s main diagnostic centre. h/t UNDP in the Arab States region Read more here. https://lnkd.in/dv5BQF5W

Thank you dear Margunn Indreboe Alshaikh for reminding us about this beautiful video made by UNDP in partnership with the European Union. Friends, if you care about Sudan, take five minutes to watch it. Sudanese people deserve to live in peace. This war must stop!
Almost ten years ago, UNDP Sudan created this beautiful film 'We are all #Sudan' showcasing the diversity, beauty and hope of the country and its people. It is worth watching, and re-watching, to remind ourselves of the potential and possible future this country deserves. -A far cry from the recent happenings, so well and somberly analysed in The Economist 'Sudan: Why its catastrophic war is the world's problem' https://shorturl.at/zZXem

How has the war in Sudan impacted the economic realities of the population, across occupations, income levels and geographies? Earlier this year, UNDP and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) offered insights into these questions through a joint study assessing the socioeconomic impact of the war on rural households. This study reflects the level & rigor of data research that will inform UNDP’s work to help Sudan achieve long-term resilience, durable peacebuilding and sustainable development in the years to come. 3,200 feddans of land in Sudan are being optimized through agricultural mechanization support from UNDP--which is helping address immediate food security needs as well as enhancing resilience for Sudanese farmers. Enhancing food security and livelihoods is just one way UNDP Sudan effectively bridges the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) nexus, connecting immediate humanitarian assistance with long-term sustainable development.
