Localized transition pathways, especially at the national level, are essential for meaningful climate action that respects and integrates unique local contexts. In Asia, the priority is to develop pathways that position Asian markets as leading exporters to global markets, allowing them to drive crucial progress in sector-wide #decarbonization. This focus remains at the core of AIGCC’s work as we support Asian economies in aligning with global climate goals.
To achieve global climate goals, we need to get local. We want to drive both national level ambitions and local action by surfacing the reality of private sector transitions on the ground. During #NYCW2024, Climate Arc, and ClimateWorks Foundation joined forces with several thematic partners to explore ways of building richer and more context-specific climate transition analysis. 🤝 Representatives from across philanthropy, non-profits, academia, and financial institutions came together to unpack the gaps and challenges involved in localizing analysis; discussing possible solutions, areas for stronger coordination, and the highest impact actions we could achieve together. 💡The dialogue was clear: radical collaboration is key to power the localised transition analysis needed to meet global climate goals and ensure rapid change. For a detailed overview of the workshop discussions, read our article below. By addressing priority actions together, we can create a more detailed, context-specific approach to unlocking climate transitions that bridge the gap between global objectives and local realities. A huge thank you to our thematic partners for driving these conversations, we look forward to continuing the work, together! With COP29 coming up next week, this coincides with the 4th anniversary of the Net Zero Asset Managers (NZAM) initiative. Based on latest data from 2023-2024 preliminary reporting, where 170 asset managers have responded, NZAM signatories have been working to implement their net zero commitments. In the upcoming year, the initiative will continue to focus on supporting investors to deliver on their fiduciary obligations to manage the financial risks and opportunities associated with climate and to enhance long-term value for their beneficiaries. More in the blog: https://bit.ly/48J98Rx CEO Rebecca Mikula-Wright writes in her capacity as current NZAM Chair. AIGCC is one of six Founding Partners of the initiative. As governments prepare for #COP29 next week, find out which countries have robust climate policies and emissions pathways to support the goals of the Paris Agreement on the ASCOR tool: https://lnkd.in/eyp5yWxe This year, the Assessing Sovereign Climate-related Opportunities and Risks (ASCOR) project has expanded its assessments to 70 countries, up from 25 in 2023. This coverage represents over 85% of global greenhouse gas emissions, 90% of global GDP, and 100% of some of the major global government bond indices, including the FTSE World Government Bond Index. To complement the data release, the TPI Centre, the academic partner of the ASCOR project, will publish an analysis of the assessments in a report, “State of Transition in Sovereigns 2024: Tracking National Climate Action for Investors,” later this month. Stay tuned! The ASCOR project is led by asset owners, asset managers and investor networks. The ASCOR tool is created and managed by the TPI Centre, part of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment at the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). A special thanks to: 🔹ASCOR co-chairs: Victoria Barron at GIB Asset Management, Claudia Gollmeier at Colchester Global Investors Limited, Esther Law at Amundi Asset Management and Adam Matthews at The Church of England Pensions Board 🔹Other project partners: Aktia Bank, Allspring Global Investments, Asia Investor Group on Climate Change (AIGCC), Ceres, Inc., Chronos Sustainability (Rory Sullivan), Franklin Templeton, Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC), Investor Group on Climate Change (IGCC), MFS Investment Management, Ninety One, Principles for Responsible Investment, and the UN-convened Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance (#NZAOA) 🔹ASCOR research team: Antonina Scheer, Camila Cristancho, Giorgia Monsignori Johannes Honneth, Sylvan Lutz, Setenay Hızlıok, Simon Dietz, Carmen Nuzzo and the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment 🔹With thanks as well to the Undergraduate Research Fellows, Anna Eszter Kiszely and Emily Young, who supported the ASCOR research team earlier this year. #SovereignDebt #ResponsibleInvestment #SovereignBonds #NDCs #ClimatePolicy #JustTransition #ClimateFinance #esg #TransitionFinance

Absolutely delighted that Asia Investor Group on Climate Change (AIGCC) are now supporting our work on Investing Sustainably in Emerging Markets!! AIGCC are a fantastic organisation, it has been a pleasure working with Monica B. Harrison Smith and the wider team and very much looking forward to further collaboration going forward! #esg #emergingmarkets #sustainability #sustainableinvesting #sustainablefinance #collaboration https://lnkd.in/ebm7dkZv
We are thrilled to announce that Asia Investor Group on Climate Change (AIGCC) has joined our Investing Sustainably in Emerging Markets initiative. Together with a group of asset owners, asset managers and other investor groups, we joined forces to call on asset managers to ensure their approach to #ESG is aligned with sustainable investment in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) and does not inadvertently lead to divestment from these regions. EMDEs contribute over half of global GDP and are home to 85% of the population. By 2050, six of the seven largest economies will be EMDEs. However, sustainability related policies may unintentionally discourage investment in these vital regions. We are collaborating to address this issue in the following ways: 🔹 Developing best practice examples to help asset managers avoid inadvertent sustainability-related divestment from EMDEs; 🔹 Raising awareness and enhancing understanding of the current landscape, including challenges and potential solutions; 🔹 Assessing asset managers on this issue as part of our next Financial System Benchmark publication in January 2025. AIGCC is pleased to join World Benchmarking Alliance's Investing Sustainably in Emerging Markets initiative. WBA and AIGCC are aligned in our collective mission to encourage all investors to adopt sustainable investing practices, while considering the various development stages across emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs). Asia has some of the largest emerging markets globally and Asian investor perspectives should continue to form one of the foundations in global climate action. It is also crucial that EMDEs, home to majority of global population, are not overlooked in the global transition to a low-carbon economy. Several of our investor members have already expressed support in enhancing our EMDE strategy. We look forward to collaborating with WBA to mobilise capital towards sustainable development and mitigate climate risk.
