It was indeed a privilege for our Director, Dr Pauline Erica Tay, to be invited to share on Asia-Pacific’s Healthcare Revolution at GITEX GLOBAL Largest Tech & Startup Show in the World last month, together with Dr Ramon Varughese, moderated by Attila Hertelendy, Ph.D., curated by Natasha Swamy. There was so much interest from the audience on how South East Asian countries like Singapore 🇸🇬 and Malaysia 🇲🇾 have taken the lead in implementing new digital technologies such as AI to improve healthcare processes. 🩻🩺🖥️ On the sidelines, Dr Tay was also deeply honoured to meet up with Dubai Health’s Atif Albraiki, Yacine H., Scott Rutherford, and Mariano Gonzalez Gomez Leadership and Transformation 🔄 to continue discussions on potential cross-border collaborations in healthcare innovation between Dubai and Singapore 🇦🇪 🇸🇬 🤝🏻 It was an opportunity for the National Health Innovation Centre (NHIC) to establish many new networks and renew existing connections. 🎤 Earlier at SWITCH 2024, Dr Pauline Erica Tay, Director, National Health Innovation Centre (NHIC), kicked off Singapore Week of Innovation and Technology (SWITCH) BEYOND in the first panel of the day titled “The Next Frontier: Exploring Digital Twins' Role in Healthcare Innovation,” together with an esteemed line-up of panellists who shared their insights on the transformative potential of Digital Twin technologies in healthcare. Often described as “digital mirrors,” these advanced technologies create virtual replicas of patients and simulations of healthcare systems to enable personalised, analytics-powered, data-driven care delivery. Dr Andrew Wu, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Mesh Bio, highlighted how building patient pathways in Digital Twin technology enables personalised disease progression insights for improved patient outcomes and care for people living with chronic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, based on predictive analytics. Dr Melvin Heng, Executive Director and Group Chief Executive Officer, Thomson Medical Life Science and Thomson Medical Group shared about the importance of validating the digital twin models retrospectively and prospectively to build trust and demonstrate transparency among end-users. A/Prof Rinkoo Dalan, Senior Consultant, Tan Tock Seng Hospital emphasised the need to work collaboratively with all stakeholders such as policymakers and regulators to establish new processes and accessible frameworks to enable the adoption and scaling of digital twin technologies in healthcare. Prof Dean Ho, Provost’s Chair Professor, National University of Singapore, introduced an approach of using fewer biomarkers to yield richer, more accurate insights into patient health trajectories. The session concluded with key takeaways from the panellists on how digital twin technologies are set to transform patient care: - Accelerating efficiency of clinical trials: By reducing the sample size required, digital twins can streamline clinical trials, expediting product development and bringing innovations to market faster. - Empowering patients: These technologies offer actionable insights that enable individuals to take charge of their health, encouraging proactive lifestyle changes. - Improving patient outcomes: Simulations provide insights to anticipate potential complications which can be avoided, thus supporting more timely interventions for better patient outcomes.
