On October 4th, we joined Broward County in Florida, for the kick-off of the County’s Resilience Strategy Journey: the Agenda Setting Workshop. Officials from around the County gathered to connect across departments, identify common goals and challenges and discuss the county's most pressing shocks and stresses, including extreme heat and flooding. Home to over 20 municipalities, Broward County Government is the newest member of the R-Cities' network. The County has a long tradition of resilience planning and is now focusing its efforts on developing a strategy to understand how #resilience thinking can be embedded within the processes and structures of the County. Congratulations to the CRO of Broward County, Dr. Jennifer Jurado and her team for leading such a robust and inclusive process! Arup Broward County Resilient Environment

It pays to invest in solutions that strengthen public health and climate resilience. Yet pledges of up to $1 billion USD at last year's climate conference fall far short of the $11 billion per year needed to adapt to climate change's health impacts. Nearly all cities have already experienced losses due to floods, storms, and heat waves, which directly impact residents' health and earnings. Preventative action at the intersection of climate, health, and equity saves lives and is less costly than building back after a disaster. It's time countries, cities and funders reflect on their priorities and invest in a healthy future for all. Chief Resilience Officers are the core of our network. They lead the participatory process of assessing risks, articulating resilience strategies and working across government to deliver solutions. In 2022 and 2023, we supported the development of 3 new resilience strategies, brought CROs together to strengthen our community of practitioners and launched our Global Risk and Resilience Fellowship with 5 partner cities. 🔗 Find out more about our support for resilience planning, climate resilient, equitable and circular cities in our 2022-2023 Impact Report.

Chennai continues to inspire cities across India and the globe by creating innovative solutions combining nature-based approaches with deep knowledge of its communities to thrive. From using nature to treat wastewater, to preventing plastic from entering waterways, and building lush rooftop gardens that provide both nutrition and shelter from the sweltering heat, Chennai is a true pioneer in resilience. Now, through our partnership with the Chennai Resilience Centre and the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company, we’re excited that these solutions will be scaled across the city and the state. Krishna Mohan Ramachandran, Chennai's Chief Resilience Officer, represented R-Cities during this important signing. Thank you, Krish, for your leadership and commitment. The Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Chennai Resilience Centre (representing Resilient Cities Network in Chennai) and the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company (TNGCC) was featured in The Hindu dated 26th September 2024. The collaboration will focus on some key areas derived from the collective work of the organizations over the last few years including 🌿 Leveraging edible rooftop gardens as green infrastructure for mitigating urban heat, creating healthy and self-reliant communities by improving food security. 🌿 Nature based and region-specific plans to establish sustainable water balance model 🌿 Bringing circularity into Chennai’s Solid Waste Management system through neighborhood-based zero waste initiatives 🌿 Capacity building programs to enable efficient management of existing waste management infrastructure in Chennai’s waterways Learnings from the ongoing and planned projects will inform efforts to scale up similar interventions across Tamil Nadu as well as facilitate opportunities for exchanging knowledge on the resilient tools and methodologies with other global cities that are part of the Resilient Cities Network. Cities know extreme heat, flooding, and air pollution are serious problems, but few have plans to address both climate and health risks together. With support from The Rockefeller Foundation, R-Cities and the Yale School of Public Health teamed up to produce the report "Urban Pulse: Identifying Resilience Solutions at the Intersection of Climate, Health and Equity." Check out the 10 recommendations our researchers propose to enhance climate and health resilience. Here are just a few: ❤️🩹 Place prevention and health promotion at the forefront of climate adaptation and mitigation strategies 💸 Redirect financial flows to investments that have climate and health co-benefits 📊 Enhance data infrastructure and surveillance capabilities When we put health at the heart of climate strategies, public support and political engagement for solutions increases. 🔎 Explore the full report: https://lnkd.in/gDSie_jU What actions is your city taking to improve health and climate resilience?
