Cities where women lead are cities that build healthier, stronger and more inclusive communities. We are calling on cities to share their efforts to advance gender equality for the #WomenInResilience 2025 challenge, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara's Instituto de Planeación y Gestión del Desarrollo del AMG led by CRO Martha Patricia Martínez Barba, Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB), CIDEU and Metropolis, World Association of the Major Metropolises. Last year's edition of the #WomenInResilience challenge featured climate, jobs and public safety initiatives that recognize and value the role of women in their communities from cities across Latin America. This year, we will highlight projects and public policies at the city and metropolitan level that integrate women's empowerment, reducing inequalities and community resilience from all over the world. 👉 Read the call for submissions here: https://lnkd.in/d53dwVTe 👉 To participate, cities should submit their #WomenInResilience initiatives by 4 April here: https://lnkd.in/dsXEX6K4

One of the biggest challenges cities face in building resilience is 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞. While cities have come a long way in proving the costs of inaction and have resilient solutions with a clear value proposition, funding doesn’t always follow. Broward County welcomed member cities for the Resilience Finance Knowledge Exchange. At the heart of the discussion, cities shared their goals and strategies to build comprehensive portfolios of investment-ready resilience projects and to embed resilience into everything they do. ♻️🌍 Cities are on the frontline of rising costs and resource scarcity — how can they shift from linear waste to circular opportunity? Traditional take-make-waste models are no longer sustainable. Circular business models like repair, rental, resale, and refill offer a path toward a more regenerative and resilient economy. Yet today, only 8.6% of the global economy is circular. 🗝️ What if cities could unlock the power of circularity to build stronger local economies? Our next #CitiesOnTheFrontline session explores how recommerce and circular business models can create thriving, resilient cities. ⬇️ Register now and stay tuned to meet our speakers! 📅 Thursday, April 17 https://lnkd.in/eSjhCUzV Co-developed by Visa and Resilient Cities Network

"Every peso we save before a disaster is a peso that can speed up the rebuilding of a home, the reopening of a business or the recovery of a school." This is the future that Mexico City is aiming for with the #GlobalRiskandResilienceFellowship, said Myriam Urzua Venegas, Secretary for Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection. Teaming up with Howden, the city is exploring how parametric insurance can help strengthen its financial capacity to manage seismic risks and protect low-income communities and businesses in high-risk areas. Cities and insurance companies often approach risk from different angles, but complementary perspectives. While cities need to take a panoramic social, political, economic perspective, insurers tend to focus on asset values and the costs of securing those assets. Zurich North America takes a holistic approach to understanding risks, collaborating with R-Cities and communities prone to extreme weather to tackle the root causes of risks and balances them with insurance solutions. The Risk, Growth and Resilience summit held in Chicago by Zurich North America, WTW and The Executives' Club of Chicago brought over 100 leaders together to discuss emerging risks and opportunities to respond to them. R-Cities' Executive Director Lauren Sorkin shared examples of how our member cities are responding to an evolving landscape where extreme heat and flooding are becoming more common. Communities in Houston, Boston, Greater Manchester and Melaka are learning from insurance risk models to assess their vulnerabilities and develop solutions with public sector and private support. Together, cities and insurance can be allies in making the case for risk-reducing investments and mobilizing finance for a more #resilient future. Z Zurich Foundation

Many growing cities produce more waste than they can keep up with, but community-led solutions prove that minimizing waste is possible. The Residents of Kasturba Nagar Association organized volunteers and partners like Chennai Resilience Centre, Okapi Research and Advisory Pvt Ltd to help pilot low-cost, practical ways to reduce household waste. Residents are crucial to the system's success—the secret is making the process "so effortless that not doing it feels ridiculous" says Professor Indumathi M. Nambi, PhD, FNAE, whose civil engineering students contributed to the effort. Chennai is demonstrating that a circular future is possible when the solutions are easy and everywhere. #CitiesSolveCitiesDeliver #CommunityResilience

What if instead of starting with what's wrong, cities look at their communities' strengths? "Sometimes, we just label whole communities as vulnerable" says Karl Astbury. "We should instead be looking at what's really strong within a community and what can we build on." Through #Resilience4Communities, residents are actively contributing to planning and putting in practice resilience-building initiatives. Local governments and private-sector partners are enabling and supporting communities to shape their future and thrive.
