We envision a world without plastic waste in the environment, driven by a functioning circular economy.
About us
We envision a world without plastic waste in the environment, driven by a functioning circular economy. We consider ourselves a global laboratory for sustainable solutions helping to get closer to that vision. Our experience and know-how draw from the unique context of more than 50 projects. We de-risk, develop and deploy new technologies, business models and solutions for solving plastic waste leakage in the environment. But this alone is not enough. Ending plastic waste is complex and will require systemic change, driven by all of us. That is why we, as a global non-profit, convene more than 70 companies across the plastic value chain with local communities, civil society groups, intergovernmental organisations, and governments. Together, we are finding solutions that are environmentally friendly, socially acceptable and economically viable. How can we unlock the value of plastic films and flexible plastics at scale? We’re partnering with the Council of the Great Lakes Region (CGLR) to tackle this challenge with a secondary sortation pilot programme in Chicago. With the support of Titus MRF Services and LRS, this project aims to demonstrate the economic viability of secondary sortation by recovering flexibles and films for recycling. This in turn improves the quality and value for Material Recovery Facilities and subsequently, overall recycling rates. The pilot will help determine the scale required to make secondary sorting cost-effective – knowledge that can then be shared with other regions to enable replication. By 2040, mobilising over $1 trillion in investments across the plastics value chain will be crucial for transitioning to a circular model. The Lombard Odier Investment Managers (LOIM) Plastic Circularity Fund is one in a toolkit of financing instruments that will prove pivotal in driving this shift. By investing in companies developing innovative, lower-carbon plastics that extend product life and enhance recycling, the Fund aims to reduce plastic waste and emissions, while accelerating plastic circularity. Public-private partnerships are vital for mobilising not just resources, but also the expertise and technologies needed to develop and deploy scalable solutions. Together, let’s drive action towards sustainability, with investments that spark innovation and inspire change. #EndPlasticWaste #CircularEconomy #sustainability #investment

Upskilling waste workers is crucial for improved health and safety, and increased employee engagement. It also leads to better plastic waste management, especially in ensuring efficient material recovery facility (MRF) operations. Through ongoing projects with our partners in Brazil, China, Indonesia, and Kenya, we have identified seven key steps to develop and provide effective training for waste workers in basic manual sorting facilities. These steps, along with practical guidance for each, are covered in our Solution Model Playbook, Unlocking Value Through Basic Manual Sorting Of Municipal Waste. For valuable insights and strategies to uplift waste workers, improve value recovery in the waste collection process, and ultimately, support replication efforts, download the playbook here: https://bit.ly/4ajBqBC #EndPlasticWaste #SolutionsForChange #SolutionModels #playbooks #CircularEconomy

Flexible plastics like packaging are challenging to recycle due to their low weight and difficulty in sorting. Informal waste pickers sell by weight, so they tend to prioritise other plastics over flexibles for better income. In Gresik, SEArcular by Greencore Resources Ltd has worked closely with collection centres (pengepuls) to incentivise the collection of flexibles by applying targeted solutions, such as introducing the support of working capital to provide fair and stable prices for flexibles. Swipe through to explore how Gresik is tackling its plastic waste problem with targeted solutions. Building on years of implementing projects locally, engaging with the government and collaborating with partners for catalytic financing towards developing a circular economy for plastic, we’re pleased to announce that we’ve signed a letter of intent for a co-investment partnership with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and Indonesia's Ministry of Public Works and Housing (MPWH). Together, we aim to improve solid waste management (SWM) services in select cities and districts in Indonesia by enhancing and developing waste management infrastructure. The collaboration is expected to benefit over 9 million people. By offering climate-aligned, circular economy-driven solid waste management services, it seeks to help build capacity for local and regional governments, and address livelihood concerns for informal waste workers. As discussions progress on the International Legally Binding Instrument (ILBI) on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, it’s clear that no single solution fits all nations’ waste management challenges. Diverse circumstances, development stages of waste systems, and resource disparities necessitate a range of customised strategies for each country. This tailored approach is key for advancing waste management efforts. The ILBI supports national efforts by providing a framework for global cooperation and innovation in tackling plastic pollution. Dive into our carousel to see how the ILBI can facilitate adaptable strategies and holistic efforts in our collective fight against plastic waste. #EndPlasticWaste #circulareconomy

How can we empower the informal workers who form the backbone of waste management systems in many countries? These unsung heroes work tirelessly to keep cities clean, playing a crucial part in our advancement towards a circular economy. But in their daily lives, they grapple with challenges of income instability, lack of basic welfare, and social stigma. Since December 2022, the Plastic Cycle Project, initiated by VietCycle and supported by the Alliance, has provided nearly 600 waste collectors in Vietnam with essential social welfare support, including rental assistance and health insurance. Our close collaboration has yielded valuable insights on this often-overlooked sector, and what can be done to recognise their vital contributions to society.
