An environmental and social impact initiative, growing trees and empowering livelihoods on the slopes of Kilimanjaro

About us

The Kilimanjaro Project is an environmental and social impact initiative. We love trees and want to inspire tree growing and forest protection around Kilimanjaro, Tanzania and across East Africa. We are inspired by the words of Tanzania's founding President, "Let us a light a candle on top of Kilimanjaro, to be a light that shines beyond our borders, to give hope where there is despair, love where there is hatred and dignity where before there was only humiliation." The Kilimanjaro Project commits to: - Impact the local climate and forest ecosystems. - Raise global awareness of local climate change and glacial decline on Mt. Kilimanjaro - Educate schools and the youth on the importance and process of forest protection and reforestation - Create jobs by empowering local people to grow, plant and maintain trees in needy areas - Improve livelihoods by encouraging the development of natural resources and forest products - Use Mobile app technology will monitor tree survival, health and provide data reporting through an online portal ensuring transparency with organisations and donors Currently we are working in partnership with GIZ and a multi-stakeholder initiative on a water stewardship program in the Pangani river Basin, restoring riparian zones along rivers in the Arusha and Kilimanjaro Regions. We campaign for trees through our "Tuje Pamoja" Campaign. We believe that together we can ensure a brighter greener future for all!

Developing nature-based carbon projects in Africa.

The Kilimanjaro Project is a brilliant example of community-led ecosystem restoration. We need many many more of these projects, yet finance is unbelievably hard to come by. Please support if you can.

It is with slight trepidation and much hope that I share this post today. I know we’re not the only organization in this position. As investors & partners are thinking about how to build a pipeline of high quality #NbS projects, we also need to solve for early stage project financing, #catalyticinvestment that helps grow bankable projects. Many developers are struggling to keep the lights on while we are trying to figure out standards, guidelines, best practice and financial flow to nature. These often create paralysis and fear of getting it wrong. Finance is flowing into #MRV and other NbS supporting industries, which is important, but so is our work on the ground. Regenerating #ecosystems and #biodiversity takes decades; it's complex, with returns that don’t always fit investor timelines and IRR, but it’s necessary—trees are essential for the health and wellbeing of our planet. Projects also need fair deals - finance in service of life! where communities thrive from #carbon or #nature investments, where profits are distributed proportionally, without exploitation and extraction, where we share a mindset of abundance, not scarcity - where there is enough on this earth for all to thrive.  The Kilimanjaro Project has been operating for 7 years. We have had triumphs & setbacks, we have persevered, built resilience, both within ourselves as an organization and within the communities we serve.   Now, at the precipice of transformative scale, literally the last yards (months) until we secure substantial investment, we have run out of financial runway. We need the last burst of energy, through catalytic financial support, to get the project over the line. We are seeking urgent bridging finance through philanthropy or grants, and are ready for  early-stage investments in our community-driven carbon project. Our journey includes a feasibility study with The Nature Conservancy (AFCC), participating in Africa's first biodiversity accelerator BIRA, and becoming a The International Small Group and Tree Planting Program (TIST) DIY project partner. Our mission is clear: to make a meaningful impact on our planet, starting with the land and communities around #Kilimanjaro. We believe that with your support, we can bring this vision to life. Will you help us make this final push? For a quick contribution, visit our GoFundMe campaign: https://gofund.me/d5f16298. Kijani Pamoja - The Kilimanjaro Project is on the brink of significant growth and expansion. To ensure we are prepared for this exciting journey, we recognize the importance of a strong board, robust governance, and strict compliance as foundational supporting pillars for our success. We are assembling a dynamic board with high-integrity members from diverse industries to ensure we have all the right tools in our toolbox. Introducing Lina Ratansi group Chief Executive of RSM East Africa and one of the top 50 women in management in Africa, a seasoned finance and taxation expert, 2022/2023 president of EO Tanzania, EUBG board member, and member of the CEO Round Table (CEO Roundtable of Tanzania). Lina brings immense board experience to Kijani Pamoja. We are incredibly thankful that Lina Ritansi has embraced the vision of Kijani Pamoja, and we look forward to working with her in the coming years. Background on Kijani Pamoja: Kijani Pamoja, well known for The Kilimanjaro Project initiative is creating a rumble from slopes of Kilimanjaro, demonstrating what it’s going to take to scale and accelerate biodiversity and ecosystem restoration in partnership with local communities and smallholder farmers, unlocking investments that provide positive financial, social, and regenerative outcomes. In December 2023, Kijani Pamoja completed its carbon feasibility study funded by The Nature Conservancy in Africa Carbon Catalyst and is now preparing for implementation.  This was  followed by an exciting opportunity early in 2024 , being selected to one of Africa’s first biodiversity accelerators under the African Leadership University, School of Wildlife, in the BIRA consortium led by Axum .  Kijani Pamoja is one of the African pioneers of nature credits / certificates, exploring new pathways to unlock nature finance in “service of life” beyond carbon.  Kijani Pamoja is actively seeking catalytic finance in their pioneering programmes. #finacingnature #bioregionalfinance #biodiversity #carbon #VCM #integrity #regenerativeagriculture #smallholderfarmers #kilimanjaro #bioregions #africa #partnerships #dynamicpartnerships

Syntropic Podcast. A flight manual for Spaceship Earth Episode 2 HUMAN SYMPHONIES. Partnerships for a Syntropic planet Collaboration, teaming and partnering that unleashes brilliance In this podcast Christine McDougall is in conversation with Sarah Scott, Founder and Executive Director Kijani Pamoja, The Kilimanjaro Project Join Christine and Sarah in their moving, enlightening and far-reaching conversation exploring how we have these truths: • Each life has value, and each life is unique. • Humans want to make a valuable contribution, to belong, to be a part of something that asks them to be better than their small selves. • We do not want to feel exploited, to be extracted to extinction, to colonise or be colonised. • We long for beauty, creativity, and connection - to touch, daily, the sacred and awe. This podcast examines - then what do we do? We redesign everything in partnership with life. Learn from Sarah’s work about how a Syntropic Enterprise is a living system. It is biological. It has cells, membranes, and organs. No one part can thrive without the other. Communication flows are exquisite and extraordinary. It has a nervous system. It also has consciousness connected to the greater consciousness of the field. Christine and Sarah speak of the critical anatomical parts of a Syntropic Enterprise. Whether your enterprise is a family, a partnership, a team, a community, an NGO, or a company. Remember that each part, like your liver, cannot exist without the healthy functioning of all other parts. All parts work together synergistically, where the collective is greater than any part. This conversation speaks the parts that make the whole, and shares stories of application in real time. Practical. Real. Alive. Human. Hopeful. Profitable. How this effects people, teams, families, communities, enterprises, earth and the future when we apply these principles. An dense week unfolded in Dodoma at the 10th Annual Agricultural Policy Conference. I had the honour of sharing a panel discussion hosted by Axum with the wise Geoffrey Kirenga CEO from SAGCOT (Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania) and Vianey Rweyendela country director of AGRA. We discussed #regenerativeagriculture - driving Tanzania's Positive Growth. After our lively discussion I asked Geoffrey who is expanding SACGOT to other corridors in Tanzania, "Do you have hope for regenerative agriculture in Tanzania?" I was so encouraged by his response, "YES! Absolutely, there are so many stories of positive change, these have to amplified." And to add, was so encouraging to see several of the topics centre around the inclusion of woman and youth in the agricultural sector! At The Kilimanjaro Project we are working in the Pangani Basin on a community carbon project, driven at the core by regenerative agriculture, working with smallholder farmers to make more informed land use choices that are good for the #planet, #biodiversity #soilhealth, and also good for diversifying their incomes and maximizing their yields. Just about to start our investor / financing roadshow to raise the much needed capital to start landscape wide implementation. We need acceleration and scale of regenerative practices. We need government policy to support these practices. Excited to be on this journey with amazing partners like The Nature Conservancy The Nature Conservancy in Africa BIRA Suzanne Holmberg (TIST), Axum Xilva I leave the conference today, inspired, focused, and driven to be part of the change. Thank you Devang Vussonji Syakaa William Noel Mtenga Nelson Karumuna for some good discussions and working sessions, Things to look out for The National Agroecology Strategies Paul Holmbeck BIRA Accelerator Gayle Peterson Frank Aswani Okavango Capital Partners Josep Oriol Hassan Sachedina, PhD Karl "Charly" Kleissner Cheryl Margoluis Paul Simpson OBE Hannah Wood

Africa needs investment models designed by Africans, for Africa! The theme of the week has been all about unlocking finance for nature. We need a new financial reality that works with nature, indigenous peoples and local communities following natures principles and able to handle nature's complexity. Thank you to the African Natural Capital Alliance and FSD Africa for hosting such a diverse group of people, organisations and businesses. Mark Napier Fiona Napier Dorothy Maseke Stephen K. As 2023 draws to a close, I have been reflecting on the journey. We continue to strengthen our membership and our board. In June we welcomed Roberts Muganzi as Chief Operating Officer - the best hire ever! These changes are the building blocks for the ongoing transformation from a small “family run” NGO to a compliant high performing “sports team.”  The metaphor of turning a ship around resonates here. Changing a ship's course at sea requires time, strategy and dedication. It's not an overnight process. The ship's captain needs to understand the currents and winds to navigate effectively, organisational leaders need to comprehend the current state of the organisation and what is needed to navigate the winds and waves. They must adapt their strategies and direction to align with the prevailing conditions, prioritising certain tasks over others, understanding that there is a progressional effect to actions taken. Commitment and resilience are vital. Challenges and resistance are inevitable. Staying dedicated to the transformation is essential. A supportive team, akin to a ship's crew, is indispensable; continually nurturing trust and respect. What has been the most challenging 18 months of my career has also turned out to be the most transformative both personally and professionally. And as The Kilimanjaro Project (Kijani Pamoja) stands on the precipice of growth and scale, I am more convinced than ever that we will succeed. As the Founder and Executive Director of Kijani Pamoja, my goal is to demonstrate to our partners (board, employees, donors and stakeholders) that we have a clear navigational plan, well-defined purpose and strategy. We are prepared for all weather, ready to adjust our sails, or our course if necessary. THANK YOUs! A huge thank you to The Nature Conservancy and the AFCC team (Kevin Juma Charlie Langan Justine Gwegime) and the TNC global carbon markets team for believing in us and continuing to commit to this exciting journey together. To TIST (Suzanne Holmberg and Kevin Martin, PhD) we love co-creating with you, and look forward to 2024 to see how the TIST DIY model blossoms and grows. And there are more, those who have stood in the wings, championing us, encouraging us, believing in us.  We look forward to building dynamic active partnerships in 2024! Join us! Watch this space for some exciting announcements coming up in early December!
