We help to accelerate the transition to a net-zero automotive industry through funding, support and insights.
About us
The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) collaborates with UK government, the automotive industry and academia to accelerate the industrialisation of technologies, supporting the transition to deliver net-zero emission vehicles. Since its foundation in 2013, APC has funded 170 low-carbon projects involving 402 partners, working with companies of all sizes, and has helped to create or safeguard nearly 50,000 jobs in the UK. The technologies developed in these projects are projected to save over 288 million tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of removing the lifetime emissions from 12 million cars. With its deep sector expertise and cutting-edge knowledge of new propulsion technologies, APC’s role in building and advising project consortia helps projects start more quickly and deliver increased value. In the longer term, its work to drive innovation and encourage collaboration is building the foundations for a successful and sustainable UK automotive industry. In 2019 the UK government committed the Automotive Transformation Fund (ATF) to accelerate the development of a net-zero vehicle supply chain, enabling UK-based manufacturers to serve global markets. ATF investments are awarded through the APC to support strategically important UK capital and R&D investments that will enable companies involved in batteries, motors and drives, power electronics, fuel cells, recycling, and associated supply chains to anchor their future.

🚨 UK Government commits to invest in first major automotive silicon carbide (SiC) wafer line in Newport https://lnkd.in/eKhK_sYT Dan Bunting, Head of Business Development at the APC said: It has been a pleasure working with the Vishay team and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) on this exciting UK investment in power electronics. Silicon carbide semiconductors are a key enabling technology for more efficient electric vehicles and this investment will establish capability in a critical part of the UK’s automotive supply chain. Anchoring this strategic investment in the UK is central to the objectives of the Automotive Transformation Fund and represents a key milestone in support of the UK’s Industrial Strategy.
Wales is set to benefit from £250m investment from Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. one of the world’s largest manufacturers of semiconductors, to boost production at its state-of-the-art factory in Newport. This will directly support over 500 high value, high skilled jobs in the area - and is another demonstration of businesses confidence in the UK's industrial landscape.

These will target energy storage application challenges that have extraordinary impact potential, and where there are currently only conceptional solutions or ideas at the very earliest stages of R&D. Our first Transformational Challenge will be to develop ultra-low cost long duration energy storage solutions, and will be known as UltraStore. The Faraday Institution intends to fund up to two large research projects under UltraStore from April 2026. The organisation invites expressions of interest from individuals and small teams to work closely as research consultants with the Institution in 2025 to formulate and develop novel methods and approaches and radical ideas in a co-creation and planning phase ahead of these longer R&D projects. And here’s the thing... 𝐖𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞. We’re also looking for potential solutions that could be delivered by electrical, thermal, mechanical or chemical energy storage ⚡💡🌡️🦾🧪🔋 We’re looking for blue sky, innovative, transformative, off-the-wall thinking not incremental changes to current technologies. We want to stretch the boundaries of what we think of as a battery. Are you up for the challenge? Do you know someone who might be? Share your ideas and we’ll work with you to develop them.
