NEXT WEEK!!! Tickets available for our webinar where Hannah Dixon will be presenting A Tale of Two Retrofits on Tuesday 22 October 12pm-1pm. Book here> https://buff.ly/4gXY8nf “A quick delve into the contrasting approaches of Greater Manchester’s first two AECB CarbonLite Retrofit Level 2 Projects; One an Edwardian manor house, the other a 1980s bungalow.” Hannah Dixon is the founder of Progress in Practice, a small and innovative architecture practice in Greater Manchester, specialising in Passivhaus, retrofit and low energy homes and buildings. The practice delivered the first two AECB certified retrofit projects in Greater Manchester in 2023 and are advocates for the Passivhaus and AECB approach. Hannah is passionate about inclusivity in design and sits on the board of the GM Community Led Homes hub. #aecbwebinar #retrofit #aecbcertifier #architecture #greatermanchester #communityledhomes
(AECB) Association for Environment Conscious Building
Architecture and Planning
The AECB is committed to accelerating the UK construction industry's delivery of Net Zero carbon by 2050.
About us
The Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB) is the UK’s longest established not-for-profit independent network of sustainable building professionals, tradespeople and self-builders. Founded in 1989, membership includes local authorities, housing associations, builders, architects, designers, consultants, manufacturers and self-builders. AECB champions the acceleration of the UK towards Net Zero carbon by 2050. The climate emergency is being caused by greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere. We emit huge amounts of carbon dioxide by lighting, appliances, space and water heating in our homes. Of all the emissions that come from UK buildings, 69% come from the domestic stock which is responsible for 18% of our annual national emissions. 80% of the domestic stock that will exist in 2050 already exists today. At COP26 the AECB supported the signing of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)’s High-Performance Buildings Initiative. This sets up a global network of 26 international Centres of Excellence of High-Performance Buildings to provide education, training, and resources supporting local industry in the rapid development of buildings consistent with the UN Framework for energy efficiency standards in buildings. AECB specialises in: • Running advanced online retrofit training: The e-learning CarbonLite™ Retrofit course. • Collaborating with academic institutions: The CPD Cert. Building Energy Using PHPP with TU Dublin course. • Generating guidance and standards for professionals and self-builders Including the AECB Retrofit Standard being adopted by a UK building society. • Sales of advanced PPPH software for architects and designers. • Advising government including supporting the UK Heat and building strategy (October 2021) that is: ‘putting consumers at the heart of our action to transform our buildings.”

🌍 Retrofit and Decarbonisation Strategy for Estates 🌿 The conversation around decarbonisation often focuses on domestic buildings; however, the non-domestic sector—such as NHS estates, educational institutions, and heritage buildings—is equally critical in achieving a Net Zero future. 🏛️🌱 In my recent article, I explore how older estates throughout the UK can be retrofitted to boost energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and implement strategies that allow them to feel brand new. I also discuss the unique challenges these buildings face and share insights on overcoming them. 📝♻️ Ultimately, Net Zero ambitions should not be seen as simply upgrading an estate like-for-like. In a post-COVID world, where businesses operate in completely new ways, Net Zero upgrades present opportunities for meaningful transformation, delivering improvements and inspiring innovation. Whether it’s designing flexible workspaces, improving indoor air quality, or integrating renewable energy systems, retrofitting for Net Zero provides a unique opportunity to reimagine how estates operate in a modern, sustainable world. 💡🧩 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eqBzcVEc #NetZero #Sustainability #Decarbonisation #Architecture #Retrofit #CarbonReduction #SustainableBuildings #EstateManagement #PickEverard UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) LETI (AECB) Association for Environment Conscious Building) Future net zero Sustainable Design Network Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) Passivhaus Trust Passive House Institute RIBA South West BRE The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Constructing Excellence South West The Retrofit Academy CarbonLite Enerphit Etude RIBA Pick Everard
🌍 While much of the decarbonisation conversation focuses on domestic buildings, the non-domestic sector is just as vital for achieving a Net Zero future. NHS estates, educational institutions, government buildings, and heritage assets are a key focus, as older buildings are often highly inefficient Senior Architect Samuel Warn shares his key considerations for decarbonising existing estates, offering insights into overcoming these challenges to create sustainable, efficient buildings. 🔗 Read the full article https://lnkd.in/eqBzcVEc #NetZero #Sustainability #Decarbonisation #Architecture #Retrofit #CarbonReduction #SustainableBuildings

🌟 0.10ACH @ 50 Pa 🌟 Last Friday was quite a big moment for us and our #passivhaus project on Ynys Môn: Our system air test. We'd been targetting 0.1ACH, as one should aim high (or in this case, low) but, setting a target and achieving it are often not the same thing! For those of you not in the know about passivhaus requirements; that's 6x more airtight than needed for passive house certification and 60x more air tight than needed for building regulations. Getting a result like this is a testament to the high level of attention to detail and understanding of passivhaus principles shown by our carpentry and installation team. Many thanks to Toby Keep of Wales Building Performance for undertaking the air test for us. Also big thanks to Chris Gaunt and Jonathan Huthwaite from Evergreen Architects for the architectural and PHPP work. #passivehouse #panelbuilding #offsiteconstruction #mmc #offsite #lowenergybuilding #sustainable #timefortimber STEICO UK, MEDITE SMARTPLY, Rothoblaas, Norrsken Windows, Passivhaus Trust, (AECB) Association for Environment Conscious Building, Structural Timber Association Ltd

Retrofit Archetypes Geoff Smith was in Swindon recently for the (AECB) Association for Environment Conscious Building annual conference. When we help clients with low-energy retrofit, our expertise helps when deciding which strategy to adopt, but one of the main considerations is the wide range of existing building types and construction methods. Rachel Owens from the National Retrofit Hub introduced their new Retrofit Archetypes Library and Best Practice Guides which are centralised repository for archetype-specific retrofit strategies. This is live library that encourages a holistic approach which promotes the wellbeing of building occupants during and post-retrofit. #retrofit #archetypes #AECB https://lnkd.in/eXXbK7Ms
