Creating a legacy by safely delivering infrastructure ambitions from concept to customer

About us

Barhale was formed in 1980 as a specialist tunnelling contractor and grew initially through the successful delivery of projects in the water sector, developing mechanical and electrical capabilities and a fabrication and supply subsidiary, alongside our traditional tunnelling, civil engineering and utilities skills. After 40 years of successful trading Barhale remains a privately owned business working UK-wide across the water, transport and energy sectors. We provide design, construction and maintenance services under long-term contracts with blue-chip public, regulated and private clients. Barhale is a values driven business which forms collaborative relationships. We operate as a tier 1 partner to many of our clients, often working in integrated teams. Seventy per cent of our turnover is in long-term frameworks and half of our operations are in joint ventures with long-term industry partners. Our vision is to be the best at what we do, aiming to be a market leading infrastructure services provider. Our 3 Pillar Sustainability Model defines our mission - to be the safest, most efficient and most responsible partner to our customers, supported by sound systems and processes, talented people and an engaged supply chain.

  • Great British Spring Clean 2025 The Great British Spring Clean is the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign and with the help of Walsall Council’s Clean & Green team, Barhale and BCS Group Head Office teams have been getting stuck into some lunchtime litter picks. This week has provided a great opportunity for employees to do something to actively improve the local environment, engage with colleagues, step away from their desks and soak up some Vitamin D. Litter-picking is a simple action that anyone can do to make an immediate and visible difference to the environment where we live, work and play. In fact, 97% of people surveyed after the 2024 campaign agreed they felt they had made a difference to their local area and 86% said they felt part of a national movement that is taking action to tackle litter. Huge thanks to everyone who engaged with this campaign and took the opportunity to volunteer: Alison Crawford, Ben Howard, Emma Flavin, Julie Bills, LUANA BILLS, Mark Dangerfield, Matt Charles, Natasha Dowen, Paulina Biela, Rachael Fletcher-Gabriel CPSCM, Sebastian Akers and Tom Burke #GreatBritishSpringClean #OurPeople #OurCommunity #OurEnvironment

  • Support provided for British Science Week   Staff in our Southern Region were keen to assist two schools earlier this month as part of British Science Week, which is a celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects, with this year’s theme being ‘Change and Adapt’.   Engagement with Frederick Bremer School in Walthamstow was facilitated by Motunrayo Adesope (Customer and Stakeholder Lead) with design plans and activity by Michael Olagoke (Senior Planner), Dimitris Noltsis (Pre-Construction Manager) and Harriclea B. (Customer and Stakeholder Manager), supported by STEM Ambassadors, Marta Pnishi (Customer and Stakeholder Lead) and Isabel Duke (Customer and Stakeholder Advisor). The year 9 students were challenged with a design in construction task of creating a ‘quiet zone’ in their school's courtyard which could be used by students to study.   With their school located in a busy part of London, next to a train station, along with nearby businesses and housing, the pupils needed to consider noise mitigating factors when designing their quiet space. The session provided a practical understanding of developments in design and technology, its impact on individuals, society and the environment and the responsibilities of designers, engineers and technologists. The groups presented their designs to the class, who then had the chance to challenge their peers on their reasonings and provide constructive suggestions on how designs could be improved.   Harriclea, Isabel and Gemma Banks (Third Party Liaison Officer) also attended a STEM Careers Event held at Jo Richardson Community School in Dagenham. This session was held to highlight the different types of careers associated with STEM and how each of them are important in the civil engineering industry to the year 8 students who attended from various schools across the Barking and Dagenham area, under the School Improvement Partnership. The students and teachers were able to ask questions to find out more about the company and the careers paths applicable to the industry.   LUANA BILLS (Social Impact and Sustainability Manager, Head Office) says: “These initiatives are essential, not only for inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers but also nurturing sustainability-aware citizens. They foster innovation and ‘big picture’ thinking. Our STEM Ambassadors and project teams are committed to supporting and empowering young minds to create greener, more sustainable futures.”   #BritishScienceWeek #STEMLearning #CivilEngineeringCareers #NextGeneration

  • Eade Road and Oilers Farm teams come together to assist New River Renewal Scheme Thank you to volunteers from our Eade Road and Oilers Farm project teams, working for Thames Water in our Southern Region, for taking part in the New River Renewal Scheme’s Clean Up event recently. Barhale is currently upgrading the New River at the two project locations and Albert Alexici (Site Supervisor), Joe Gannon (Foreperson) and Marta Pnishi (Customer & Stakeholder Lead) joined the team of around 20 volunteers to take part in the litter picking initiative, as well as donating resources used to facilitate the litter picking. The event is organised by a local volunteering group who are always keen to welcome more volunteers and meet every other Sunday of the month at 11am at Newton Close bridge by Bethune Road near the Woodberry Wetlands entrance, London, N16.    LUANA BILLS (Social Impact and Sustainability Manager, Head Office) comments: “The New River is a critical asset, carrying up to 220 million litres of London’s water supply over a 20-mile stretch. This vital urban ecosystem provides habitat for countless species and essential resources for communities. By supporting volunteering efforts such as litter picking, we not only help to protect wildlife but also ensure this crucial resource remains available for future generations. This is a great example of our teams living our Values and actively contributing to sustainable development.”   #Sustainability #OurEnvironment #OurCommunity #Volunteering #SocialValue

  • Enhancing resilience and flooding prevention at Holywell Row As part of the Anglian Water @one Alliance, Barhale are working in the role of principal contractor on the Holywell Row DG5 Flooding scheme, Suffolk. A £1.4 million Anglian Water project, increasing the stormwater capacity, which will prevent local communities from flooding. The works, taking place in a local farmers field opposite Wildmere Lane in Bury St Edmunds, incorporates the installation of a new rising main of 45m pipes. The pumps required replacing as several properties in the area were affected by prolonged rainfall events and flooding incidents as well as other causes such as blocked pumps and power steering failures. The team stripped the topsoil from the working area, installed a temporary cofferdam to install the storage tank consisting of 5 No. 45m rows of 1.5m diameter pipe connected with a manifold at either end and providing a storage capacity of 390m3. This system is designed to capture excess stormwater, which will travel along the pipes to the existing local pumping station to be treated before going back into the environment. With more frequent and extreme weather events, including sudden downpours and rising sea levels, these conditions heighten the risk of flooding, particularly in vulnerable areas. This project plays a crucial role in enhancing Anglian Water’s resilience by significantly reducing the risk of flooding caused by heavy rainfall, helping to protect local communities and infrastructure from the growing challenges posed by a changing climate. #floodprevention #stormwatermanagement #climateresilience #SustainableSolutions #OneAlliance
