About us

Learn together, devise solutions, and seek innovation in a state-of-the art workspace, making engagement with the defence sector more effortless. Defence does not hold the monopoly on innovation. Many militaries now leverage technologies developed in the commercial sector rather than developing bespoke solutions for their requirements. The BattleLab was born out of the need to embrace uncertainty, pivot in response to rapid global change, and leverage emerging technology faster. At Dorset Innovation Park, the collaborative environment is a partnership between Dorset Council, Defence and Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership. A centre for innovators to ideate, fail fast and succeed sooner. #collaborate #ideate #co-create

Contrary to popular belief the BattleLab does not often set up and run our own events and activities. We are a facility built for collaboration and our Defence BattleLab team are facilitators. We are more than happy to engage with those that feel similarly about collaboration and innovation so that they can raise awareness of future focus areas through events and workshops. Our purpose is to support others in their innovative journeys and bring people together to increase the pace and acceptance of innovation. STRIDE Dorset has been set up with the University of Plymouth and Dorset Council UK to enable small businesses to adapt and innovate in an ever changing world and will be running a number of workshops through the facility. You can find out more about the Battlelab and how we operate at our monthly virtual briefings. 👇 https://lnkd.in/eEa9Ejnx UK Ministry of Defence personnel can sign up to a separate brief through our Defence Battlelab SharePoint. #Defence #MinistryofDefence #Innovation #Futures #DorsetCouncil #BattleLab #SMEs #Business

Our new Quantum Sensing of Neutrinos (QuSeN) program seeks smaller, lighter neutrino detectors vs. today’s multi-ton detectors. Neutrinos — subatomic “ghost particles” with a mass near zero — are difficult to detect. QuSeN aims to develop mobile, standoff detection and monitoring of nuclear reactors and nuclear materials. https://ow.ly/3sq350TTupa Overview: Current methods for neutrino detection are unable to detect most neutrinos from nuclear activities, and the multi-ton weight of existing neutrino detectors further constrains widescale use. QuSeN intends to develop new neutrino detectors that are much lighter and transportable, enabling mobility and deployment of detector arrays for distributed sensing and pushing neutrino detection to fundamental limits of sensitivity and energy. Such neutrino detectors would enable standoff detection and monitoring of nuclear reactors and nuclear materials at greater distances and with faster detection than is possible with detectors in use today. Detectors developed under QuSeN will make use of neutrino-matter interactions that produce relatively low-energy nuclear recoils and athermal phonons in absorber materials with high neutron numbers at the (multi)-kilogram scale. Potential approaches to measuring small energy transfers could use emerging concepts from quantum computing devices and quantum sensors. These technologies can potentially measure small energy transfer signals from athermal phonons produced by coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. Proposers Day Webinar with Lightning Talks & PM sidebars: A proposers day webinar about QuSeN will be held on Nov. 12, 2024. The event will include opportunities for potential proposers to give lightning talks and register for sidebars with the QuSeN program manager. Availability of both options are on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is required to attend the webinar. For more information and to register visit https://ow.ly/wrvW50TTup8 A Broad Agency Announcement on QuSeN is anticipated to be released in late October or early November 2024. If released, the BAA will be available on https://ow.ly/9ieH50TTup7. Graphic caption: An artist’s rendering for QuSeN plays on Richard Feynman’s diagram for coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, generating a burst of athermal phonons in a neutron rich absorber. A phonon is a quantum (or the smallest measurable unit) of a soundwave, similar to photons, which are quanta of light. (DARPA image) #quantum #neutrino #quantumsensing

The world of rail transportation has undergone a surge of digitalization, leading to a remarkable transformation. At the same time, the security stakes have never been higher. Fitting that our participation in the NATO DIANA program centers around grid resilience, ever so relevant to rail transportation. Colleagues Keith Parnell and Michael Vallas are on stand at the hybrid two-day Hack The Railroad 2024, conference which tackles all things #cybersecurity in the rail space, talking about our innovative and patented FireBreak solution, enabling organisations to physically #DisconnectToProtect, remotely and on-demand with a non-IP based trigger. Great to meet up with Kimberly Mentzell Director of Cybersecurity and Aerospace at Maryland Department of Commerce and a thought provoking keynote address this morning from Kathryn (Fry) Hester - Maryland State Senator and Senate Chair, Joint Committee on Technology and Biotechnology. Thanks Technology Advancement Center (TAC), Cylus and Amtrak for enabling this event to happen. #NATODIANA #Goldilock #FireBreak #RailTechSecurity #RailCybersecurity #HacktheRailroad
