Many militaries now leverage technologies developed in the commercial sector rather than developing bespoke solutions for their requirements. The BattleLab was born out of the need to embrace uncertainty, pivot in response to rapid global change, and leverage emerging technology faster. At Dorset Innovation Park, the collaborative environment is a partnership between Dorset Council, Defence and Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership. AUKUS Maritime Innovation Challenge 2025 - Defence and Security Accelerator, in partnership with the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) in Australia, and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) in the United States (DIU), is providing advance notice of the AUKUS (Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States) Maritime Innovation Challenge 2025. National Space Innovation Programme – Call 2 The UK Space Agency invites proposals for UK-based research and development projects that will deliver innovative space technologies, applications and services through the National Space Innovation Programme (NSIP). NSIP provides co-funded grant support to de-risk high-reward projects with a clear target market. NSIP operates “open” funding calls under two strands: NSIP “Kick Starter” that supported highly disruptive early-stage innovations, and NSIP “Major Projects” which emphasizes commercialisation and growth of particularly lucrative ideas from UK businesses, universities and research organisations. Combined, these grant mechanisms provide an end-to-end support package to aid great ideas across the “valley of death” and towards commercial success. NSIP funded projects catalyse investment into the UK Space sector and contribute to the UK’s research base and future capabilities by raising Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) and positioning UK space activities closer to commercial or scientific exploitation.

#ArmedForcesCovenant We were delighted to present at the launch of the North East Regional Defence and Security Cluster. earlier this month and share good practice from our North West cluster. We were reminded once again by Peter Stitt of the value and potential that our Reservists, Cadets and Veterans offer to industry and the importance of businesses pledging their support for the #ArmedForcesCovenant. We talk a lot in industry about skills shortages and there are so many experienced, talented and hard-working individuals who are part of the Armed Forces community and have so much to offer. Many of our NWRDSC members have already pledged their support. Regional innovation and collaboration through the North East Regional Defence and Security Cluster. Huge thanks to Marc Brule-Walker and team for inviting me to speak at their kick-off event in Durham last week. It was fantastic to see how the Cluster brings together regional innovators, SMEs and representatives of major primes to foster collaboration. Inputs from local and regional authorities, and MOD capability and procurement experts provided a very clear picture of the supporting framework and available opportunity. The sense of purpose was really refreshing, and momentum is clearly building. Delighted also to see friends from the North West Regional Defence & Security Cluster who are a few months ahead and have good practice to share. It’s a privilege to represent the Military Community in the North to both Clusters. This community includes: -c15k Regular soldiers who will leave the Army with at least 50% of their working lives ahead of them. They bring specialist skills, ‘trainability’, and adaptability from their service. -c15k Reserve soldiers who we share with their civilian employers and who can invest their military skills in their workplace (and vice versa). -c15k Cadets who are building incredible life skills at an early age and will be hugely competitive when they hit the workplace. If you want to interface with this community, please look at the #ArmedForcesCovenant and its linked Defence Relationship Management (DRM) #EmployerRecognitionScheme that rewards companies for the support they provide to Defence.
