About us

The Black Collective of Media in Sports (BCOMS); Working for greater diversity in the sports media. BCOMS is working across the full breadth of the sports media for greater diversity in the industry. Our members in TV, radio, online and print include award-winning journalists, producers, presenters, researchers, production managers and editors. They also work for well known outlets in the media, such as the BBC, Sky, ITV, Channel 4, major independents and across the written press. African, Caribbean and mixed-race people are significantly under-represented in the sports media despite disproportionate interest in, and achievement from, the community on the field of play. It is estimated that up to 30% of professional footballers in the English professional leagues are black, while professional boxing and athletics boast a high percentage of black athletes. Some of our greatest national sporting heroes, from Jessica Ennis-Hill and Lewis Hamilton to Mo Farah and Raheem Sterling are from the black community. BCOMS have put together research, diversity conferences, networking events and mentoring opportunities to; · Increase understanding of what diversity is and its value · Educate and share experiences of BAME sports journalists · Create practical resource for the sports media to refer to for best practice · Inspire the next generation BCOMS has a specific remit in representing the black community, but our members feel strongly about all strands of diversity, including gender, disability, sexual orientation and religion.

This Monday, I had the extreme privilege to be invited by BCOMS for their Masterclass session at News UK. Here I was able to interact with a number of alumni from the BCOMS Media Academy particularly Kweku Afari whose work covering AFCON inspired me more to continue covering the African game. Furthermore, I got to interact with the members and facilities of talkSPORT, The Times and The Sun. Plus I also got to meet Darren Bent which as a football nerd was very cool because he was a very good player for my PES 2012 Aston Villa Career Mode save. Oh yeah and he was a pretty good England international striker as well. Anyway and lastly, what really stood out for me were my peers who were all excellent upcoming sports journalists. I am sure that we will all go far in our respective fields at this rate 😌. Thanks once again to Andrew DuCille and Jack Badu for this opportunity and now I feel better equipped to continue my journey within sports journalism. Be it my articles here, my TikTok videos, my podcast with my brother and my potential dissertation on diversity in the Women's game from a British South Asian perspective. https://lnkd.in/dZnid_C6

The BCOMS Summer Newsletter was released on Friday, highlighting the recent work of our Media Academy members, shining a spotlight on alumni who are driving change and making waves in the industry. If you're not signed up and would like to receive a copy of the most recent newsletter, please send me a DM or email. To sign up for the next newsletter, use the following link https://lnkd.in/eyW8tse7 As this year’s Media Academy starts to take shape, we are always looking for fresh opportunities for our members to develop and showcase their skills. Over the summer, we collaborated with several broadcasters to support the Olympics and Wimbledon, involving over 25 Media Academy members across both events. Recently, we placed five individuals with Premier League Uncut, are working on a production role with Sunset and Vine, and received a glowing review for a current placement with the Premier League, which has been extended. In August, five of our members contributed to the launch of the Women’s National League. We want to extend a massive thank you to all the sports media companies, brands, and clubs that trust our mission and provide opportunities for our members to shine! If any new companies, brands, or clubs are interested in learning more, please feel free to reach out. My DMs, as well as Jack Badu and Genny Cotroneo are open for discussions about anything from shadowing opportunities, hosting masterclasses to supporting open hires. Additionally, we have some exciting news about an upcoming BCOMS event—stay tuned! Have a great week, everyone! ❤️

BCOMS CLASS OF 2024 🎓🪩 There are no words to describe how wonderful the last year of my life has been with BCOMS. Anyone who knows me knows I always say that football saved my life, and BCOMS has given me the opportunity to get well and truly stuck in to the sports media industry. Interviewing the Lionesses, meeting my idols, becoming a published writer for the MEN, freelancing with the BBC, multiple press boxes in the WSL… it just kept getting better. If Amy in 2023 could see Amy in 2024, I think she’d pass out 🤣 Personally, over the last 12 months, I’ve struggled with personal battles such as my mental health, and knowing I’ve had BCOMS behind me has been such a driving force. BCOMS gave me my colour back 💌💐☀️ I’m so insanely lucky that I get to call this wonderful thing my job. Thank you for everything BCOMS ❤️ Not too bad for a scouser, ay? 😉

Sports Journalist and Reporter | BCOMS 23/24| News Associates 24/25

Yesterday I graduated from Loughborough University, the number one university in the world for sports related subjects for eight years running! My time at Loughborough has been phenomenal and I have absolutely loved it! I achieved a Bachelor of Science of Second Class Honours, Upper Division in Sport Science, Coaching and Physical Education. But alongside my degree I have: - Run a student magazine - Hosted a weekly radio show - Attended many BCOMS masterclasses - Completed a professional work placement at Loughborough Sport (also gaining a diploma in professional studies) - Gained presenting experience - Attened the World Athletics Media Development Programme - Volunteered many hours for sport and media activities - Competed in hammer throw - Finally, I met some of the most caring, supportive and wonderful people along the way Thank you so much to everyone that has contributed to my time at Loughborough University! I dreamt of attending Loughborough for over 10 years and it feels bitter sweet for my time in the Loughborough bubble to be over; but I am super excited to be starting at News Associates in September and begin studying towards my NCTJ
