#Nature and #biodiversity are taking their place alongside climate change as top strategic priorities for the board, as businesses’ reliance and impacts on nature become clearer. With less than one month to go until #COP16, and as businesses face growing pressure to demonstrate action on nature and biodiversity, Burson’s Sustainability Director Libby Wyman will be hosting an online panel discussion – “How to Avoid ‘Nature Washing’: What to do Before You Communicate” – joined by Tony Goldner from Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), Lucy Coast from Business for Nature and Dr Michael Burgass from Biodiversify. The session is specifically catered for those who may soon be grappling with how best to communicate on nature in a way that drives value and trust, without compromising the organisation’s reputation. There is an 🐘 in the room with nature positive: A huge lack of skills and people. If we are going to realise a regenerative future we are going to have to create a huge amount more jobs filled by people with different contrasting but complementary skill sets. Likewise we need to amend syllabuses such that a wide range of existing jobs are equipped with people able to tackle the nature and climate crisis - Think accountants being versed in natural capital and environmental economics, civil engineers deeply understanding nature based solutions, purchasing able to navigate environmental risks and impacts of supply chains. This is already underway with climate but we need to start with nature now. Part of this is changing our thinking and shifting the narrative of nature being a cost and one which is often cut first to something that is an opportunity to invest in and that can provide a return. And not just invest in the venture capitalist sense - individuals investing in their own education, companies big and small funding training, small businesses seeing new niches and people taking a leap of faith knowing that this is a sector that will grow and provide stability. Biodiversify in my mind is proof of this and I'm very proud that we are creating jobs, training folk and contributing positively to society. We need others to join in! It's very cool therefore to be featured today in The Times in an article to do with the nature positive economy and careers. Onwards and upwards! https://lnkd.in/eDZcEwuc

The Science Based Targets Network has released the outcomes of its company pilot programme! 📖 The pilot programme for #SBTN is a significant step forward for companies who are committed to taking action for nature and we're proud to have been able to see the successful participation of our clients Kering and Holcim included in this report 👏 Alongside 15 other companies, Kering and Holcim have been working towards setting targets for freshwater and land. Our team played an important role in deciphering the intricate methods, analysing data and even pioneering new methods when needed. When it came to the practical application of SBTN during this pilot, we worked closely with the internal teams at Kering and Holcim to ensure an approach that was meticulous as well as practical. Of the 17 companies involved in this pilot, 15 companies completed steps 1 and 2. 12 companies completed step 3 for one or more freshwater targets, 10 of these companies had at least 1 freshwater target validated and 9 companies completed step 3 for land targets with 7 achieving validation. The success of this pilot demonstrates the feasibility and importance of setting science-based targets for nature. By following the SBTN framework, companies can make positive contributions to biodiversity conservation and put into practice some of the lessons learned from this process; 💡 Early Planning is 🔑 💡 Setting accurate and impactful targets requires robust data collection 💡An iterative approach may be needed 💡Collaboration can help make the process easier.. ..which is where we come in. Whether you're sure SBTN is right for your business, or you are at the stage of exploring the strategies and frameworks that might be right for you - we're here to discuss and help you work out what the next steps look like for you, your organisation and your unique context. Ever wondered what working with us would look like? Our Principal Consultant Dr Mirjam Hazenbosch summed it up perfectly in a recent webinar with Stella Hertantyo from Conscious Fashion Collective 💫 We're big on adopting the right approach when it comes to our clients which is why we start by getting to know a business inside and out. Biodiversity is complex and so too are the unique contexts of the businesses we work with. Part of our approach includes; ➡ Conducting comprehensive biodiversity assessments ➡ Identifying key impacts and dependencies ➡ Developing biodiversity action plans ➡ Providing ongoing monitoring and reporting Whether we're working with a client in the fashion industry, or a client in an entirely different space, our dedication to a customised and collaborative approach remains the same 🤝 Interested in learning more about biodiversity in the fashion industry and how we can work with your brand to help you achieve your sustainability goals? Biodiversity credits are a hot topic, but do they truly reflect the complexity and value of our planet’s ecosystems? This is something that our director Samuel Sinclair has been giving a lot of thought to as biodiversity credits emerge as a potential solution to nature loss 💡 In his op-ed for Sustainable Views by the Financial Times, Sam considers the challenges and opportunities faced by biodiversity credits, highlighting the critical absence of the buyer's voice in current discussions. Are these credits a genuine path to restoration, or are they a distraction from the urgent need for systemic change? Ultimately, finding effective solutions to the biodiversity crisis requires careful analysis and open collaboration. We must question all potential approaches to ensure that they are grounded in science and deliver real-world benefits, which is our philosophy at Biodiversify 🌿 What are your thoughts on #BiodiversityCredits? Vote now and share your thoughts Check out Sam's op-ed 👉 https://lnkd.in/eJWubsmU

Sometimes when companies grow, fostering a good culture can take a backseat. But the reality is that having a strong culture is the key to success for any business. It drives innovation, fosters collaboration and underpins your company’s reputation. That’s why we invested time in bringing our team together last week for a well-deserved retreat. It’s not just about fun and relaxation, though there was plenty of that - it was about reinforcing our shared values and setting a plan for the future so everyone feels connected to our company’s mission 💚 We believe that a team that is happy and engaged can create exceptional results, so here’s to nurturing company culture and setting the stage for even greater things to come 🙌 #TeamBuilding #CompanyCulture #StaffWellbeing

I'm heading off to Lincoln for the NBS conference where I'll be telling the story of the emergence of the nature positive movement as seen through Biodiversify's eyes. As with so many things the story of how events unfold dictate the shape they eventually take, so the narrative that links it all together is critical context for those trying to predict where the sector will go. For example, the whole idea of biodiversity credits might not have emerged if we hadn't all been thinking about biodiversity net gain and carbon credits. If instead we'd recently gone through the health and safety movement of the 90s and early 2000s we might be talking more about standardising supply chain practices, defining unacceptable behaviour and protecting whistle blowers. Understanding narrative can help us see past the detailed frameworks to put ourselves in the shoes of the multifaceted people behind them who, just like everyone else, bring their preconceptions, biases, and passions to work. This in turn can help us avoid making our own mistakes by projecting our own views into this hyper dynamic emerging market. If that doesn't interest you then come anyway to watch me get vocally opinionated about the issues inherent in the concept of biodiversity credits at an event that literally has the term in its name... https://lnkd.in/eg_JSueN

Yesterday, UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) released the outputs from their exciting Nature-Based Solutions initiative. Our very own Daniel Oldham was a participant expert, deep-diving into the ways nature-based solutions (NBS) can be integrated into existing buildings and urban environments. Here are Dan's key takeaways; Trees and beyond 🌳 NBS can offer a wealth of possibilities. This includes planting more trees but also green roofs, walls and even small urban forests are exciting and innovative solutions Green & Grey existing together 🏗 When it comes to green and grey infrastructure, it doesn't need to be one or the other. We can create a sustainable future by combining existing infrastructure with NBS Community Stewardship 🤝 Local involvement and community buy-in is essential for securing the long-term success of NBS projects Looking ahead, Dan is hopeful that the lessons learned, challenges and solutions discussed at the Labs will be shared and used to empower stakeholders like local authorities and developers. Check out the infographics to learn more about; 💡 Challenges and Considerations for Retrofitting NBS 💡 💡 Maintenance and Stewardship of Existing NBS 💡 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g9pAMWQt #NatureBasedSolutions #Sustainability #UrbanDevelopment #Biodiversity
