I spent an amazing week in the New Forest on BTO’s Young Leaders Course this summer. It was packed with inspirational lectures and helpful workshops to equip us with the leadership skills needed to make a difference in conservation. From understanding how to create an inclusive environment, learning how to communicate with key influencers and policymakers, and the chance to run our own workshop. We also had the chance to do some bird watching, moth trapping, and a bat walk in the heart of the New Forest! Thank you to the BTO team (Rachael Griffiths, Samuel Levy, Chris Marais) for providing this fantastic experience, as well as the amazing young people I met who are passionate about creating positive action. At the BTO Marsh awards along with Halimah Sharif. An inspiring evening celebrating the dedication and contributions of ornithologists across the UK. The awards, held in partnership with the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) and the Society of Wildlife Artists, showcased not only the scientific achievements in ornithology but also the stunning art that celebrates our connection with nature. The exhibition’s beautiful pieces brought home the message that art and science are two sides of the same coin, each enhancing our understanding and appreciation of wildlife. Thank you to everyone involved in making this event so memorable – here’s to the continued advancement of ornithology and the protection of our natural world. #BTO #MarshAwards #WildlifeArt #Conservation #Ornithology #MallGalleries

It was great to welcome Cambridge Masters in Conservation Leadership students to BTO HQ. We were delighted to be able to share the joy of birds and the value and importance of bird ringing with conservation leaders of the future from all over the globe. #ConservationLeadership
🦅 A brilliant day visiting the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) headquarters in Thetford with our Cambridge Master's in Conservation Leadership students! We were warmly welcomed by Dr Juliet Vickery, Chief Executive Officer of BTO, who delivered a fascinating presentation on how science underpins effective conservation. Our students gained invaluable insights into BTO's research methodologies and their practical applications in conservation decision-making. The BTO team's enthusiasm was infectious as they shared their expertise in bird ringing, demonstrating how this crucial scientific practice contributes to our understanding of bird populations and migration patterns. The students particularly appreciated this hands-on introduction to BTO's impactful research work. This visit exemplifies what makes our Master's programme truly distinctive: the unique opportunity to learn directly from world-leading conservation practitioners. The Cambridge Master's in Conservation Leadership is delivered through an unparalleled partnership between the University of Cambridge and ten-plus prominent conservation organisations within the Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI) Conservation Initiative. 🌿 Keen to become part of this transformative programme? Discover more about the ReSCUE project we’re involved in with Natural England, which is looking into methods used for counting seabirds and measuring their flight heights. This is a crucial component in estimating the risk of collisions between birds and offshore wind farms.
What is LiDAR and how are we using it to protect seabirds? LiDAR, Light Detection and Ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses lasers to accurately measure distances in real time. Our 'ReSCUE' project, funded by the The Crown Estate through its Offshore Wind Evidence and Change programme, is examining the use of LiDAR, combined with aerial imagery, to provide improved measures of seabird flight heights. The results of this work will enhance our understanding of collision risk with offshore wind farms and mitigation measures to support the more nature-friendly expansion of offshore wind.
