Buxton Building Contractors is delighted to announce a new project at 35-36 Bow Street, a notable site located directly opposite the Royal Opera House in London’s vibrant Covent Garden. This exciting refurbishment and extension will transform the building into a modern office space while preserving its Victorian façade. The works include constructing a sleek steel-framed fifth-floor extension, complete with terraces offering views over Covent Garden, and infilling the rear lightwell to create additional office space. The project also involves installing new windows and upgraded entrance joinery. The stair and lift cores will be extended, with new fire escape staircases added to improve functionality. To enable construction above the operating Wildwood restaurant, exterior scaffolding with a gantry will be installed, ensuring safe access while minimising disruption. Careful planning and collaboration will be key to delivering this vibrant new workspace in the heart of Theatreland. We are proud to bring our expertise to this iconic area and look forward to sharing progress as we breathe new life into this heritage building.

New Air Leakage Testing Equipment As part of our commitment to sustainability, Buxton Building Contractors has invested in the Retrotec 300 Blower Door System. By using this advanced equipment in-house, our trained staff can identify air leakage early in the construction process, ensuring our projects meet stringent energy efficiency standards and provide superior comfort for occupants. This equipment is already being utilised on our Passive House project at Farmstead Road, where achieving the highest levels of energy efficiency and airtightness is a key priority. This investment reflects our practical approach to delivering sustainable, high-quality construction. Stay tuned for more updates on how we’re building responsibly.

Completion of The Document Warehouse Extension in Sittingbourne Buxton Building Contractors are pleased to announce the completion of the 20,000-square-foot extension at The Document Warehouse in Sittingbourne, Kent, for our client, Restore PLC. Delivered on time and under challenging conditions, this project is another achievement for our team. Our client, Restore PLC, praised our team for successfully delivering the project within a tight timeframe and challenging operational conditions. They highlighted our efficiency, competence, and ability to exceed expectations, noting the smooth process and high-quality outcome. Key Parts of the Project Steelwork A key milestone was the steelwork, which was designed to match the existing building. The extension includes a brickwork base and vertical metal cladding, providing a practical and attractive finish. Concrete Floor The next major step was completing the concrete floor, which covers 2,000m², is 250mm thick, and used 500m³ of concrete. The floor was poured over three days and nights to meet FM2 standards, ensuring it is durable and suitable for the building’s needs. Working with Restore PLC and Rise4, we completed the project smoothly, meeting all deadlines. Our client has now begun racking out the new warehouse space, marking the start of its operational use. We are proud to add this extension to our list of successful projects and look forward to taking on similar work in the future.

Today we are pleased to showcase 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝗲𝘁, 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲. The church sadly suffered an arson attack in 2015 which destroyed the timber roof structure. We were initially appointed to undertake a report on the severity of the damage, and to give our view on what could be reused and what needed to be replaced. The project evolved to a full restoration of the church, which was finally handed back to the congregation in April 2023. This project beautifully demonstrates the power of collaboration, working closely with Clews Architects Ltd, Buxton Building Contractors Limited, and the church’s stakeholders, we ensured the historical integrity of this cherished building was preserved while modernising it for future use. We’re delighted to see this historic space ready to serve its community for generations to come. You can read the full case study here 👉https://lnkd.in/enBRqx9K

Congratulations to everyone involved in achieving Passivhaus certification for the new almshouses for The Richmond Charities. This project is a fantastic example of how sustainability, accessibility, and thoughtful design can come together to make a real difference. It’s a privilege to have contributed to delivering these homes, which will provide comfort and financial security for their residents for years to come. Here’s to many more impactful collaborations in the future!
🍀 We are delighted to begin 2025 by announcing the successful attainment of the Passivhaus certification for the new almshouses built for The Richmond Charities. A brief about the project: 'These new almshouses are designed for elderly residents with limited means, many of whom may use wheelchairs. The terraced design proves that Passivhaus certification can be achieved without compromising specific accessibility standards and aesthetics. The homes are built with excellent airtightness, high insulation, and low heating needs, keeping energy use minimal. Comfortable indoor temperatures will be maintained year-round through underfloor heating powered by ground-source heat pumps and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, which also improves air quality. Solar panels on the green roof will provide free electricity, stored in individual batteries for each home. Collectively, these almshouses should significantly reduce the energy bills of the future residents, providing financial security and sustained well-being.' 🎉 Our heartfelt congratulations go out to everyone involved in this fantastic project: Client - The Richmond Charities Architect and Energy Consultancy - Clive Chapman Architects Main Contractor - Buxton Building Contractors Limited This achievement underscores the collective dedication and hard work put into this project, and we are happy to have played a small part in it. A good start to the new year Just before our Christmas shutdown, the tower crane for the new Royal Russell Junior School building was erected. Supplied by Delta Tower Cranes, it features a 50m jib, a 24m hook height, and a 3,000kg lifting capacity at 50m. Meanwhile, the first concrete slab for the project was poured, marking another significant milestone in the construction process. Royal Russell School, located in Croydon, is a prestigious independent school known for its exceptional facilities and commitment to sustainability. The new building, constructed adjacent to the existing junior school, will align with these values by targeting a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating. Throughout the works, the safety and wellbeing of staff and pupils will remain our top priority, with measures in place to ensure minimal disruption to the school community.

Apprenticeship Site Rotation As part of my five-year apprenticeship at Buxton’s, I am currently completing my 6-month site rotation to gain valuable on-site experience at one of our construction projects. Working on a live project has provided me with a hands-on opportunity to learn so much more about construction than I would have from university or the office. Seeing the project develop from the start to completion has given me real-life experience and knowledge that I can apply to my future career. Being involved in the day-to-day running of the site allows me to constantly learn from the site teams. Watching the project progress from drawings to physical components has significantly boosted my understanding. Although it felt quite daunting at first, I am really enjoying and benefiting from this site experience. My confidence in the industry has grown massively, and I am excited to continue developing my career in construction. Mia Day

Architects Journal Award for Community and Faith Project 2024 We are delighted to share that, Hemel Hempstead Crematorium, delivered by Buxton Building, was recently awarded the Architects Journal Award for Community and Faith Project 2024 The judges praised the project as ‘an uplifting scheme’ that provides a ‘sense of tranquillity,’ adding, ‘A continuity of language and robust materiality unites this project.’ ‘The design makes what is a very difficult experience for everyone a bit more elevated,’ the judges noted. Embedded in the ‘exceptional’ landscaping, Hemel Hempstead Crematorium provides a chapel for 140 people, alongside space for congregation, crematory, administration, staff facilities, and wider site memorial. The building’s geometric roof covers each of these functions, with its impressive timber frame, exposed internally, lending warmth and character to the main chapel space. We are thrilled by the recognition from the AJ Judges and are immensely proud of this award-winning project and the whole team involved in delivering it.
