Today, we are proud to feature Jack Brennan, PIADS Alumni who is now working as a Project Manager with Quantum Technologies Alliance based at the University of Glasgow. Jack shares his career journey to date, as well as discussing the unique benefits of being part of an enhanced PhD. These opportunities include access to cutting-edge research facilities and resources through collaboration with Industry Partners such as Seagate Technology and Tyndall National Institute; being part of a student cohort, encouraging  collaboration across different fields; opportunities for professional development with additional training in skills such as project management, leadership, and communication and finally opportunities to attend conferences, workshops and seminars to help build a robust professional network with peers, mentors, and industry leaders. Meet Ruaridh Smith, an EngD student with Photonic Integration and Advanced Data Storage Centre for Doctoral Training and he is based at Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in Glasgow. Ruaridh discusses his research with Fraunhofer, a leading applied research organisation and how this is the ideal environment to gain fascinating insights into practical research with societal impact, while he is studying. Ruaridh also discusses some of the advantages of being part of a Centre for Doctoral Training, such as being exposed to different research environments such as Tyndall National Institute the European leader in integrated ICT Hardware and Systems. Also, how being part of a cohort of students, enables you to build shared learning experiences with your peers. To find out more, watch the video below ⬇

Today, Photonic Integration and Advanced Data Storage Centre for Doctoral Training students enjoyed a site visit to Vector Photonics, based in Glasgow. Vector Photonics produces PCSEL (Photonic Crystal Surface Emitting Lasers) based semiconductor lasers – the most significant innovation in laser design and manufacture for 30 years. The company is also a spin-out from the University of Glasgow. Our students enjoyed a variety of learning opportunities today, including practical exposure and industry knowledge from our brilliant hosts Euan Livingston, Sharon Doonin and Dr Richard J E Taylor. Euan provided an insightful presentation about Vector Photonics, the technology and the employment opportunities within this rapidly growing sector. The rapid growth of the photonics sector in Scotland has created a cluster of innovative companies and internationally recognised academic centres that are developing and manufacturing cutting edge technologies and products that are exported all over the world! Thanks so much to Vector Photonics for such a fab visit 😊

Huge thanks to our academic panel Katy Tant, Scott Watson, Andrew Reid and Hugh Littlehailes, Ph.D. for their reflections of a career in academia and providing useful gudiance. Catherine Breslin provided a really interesting session on Invention to Spin out and career pathways for PGR's and Postdocs'.
