A huge thank you to Victoria Hamilton, who has raised over an incredible £2,800 for Centrepoint by running the Chester Marathon this weekend! Victoria is Director of Member Contact at Nationwide Building Society, who we launched our fantastic partnership with earlier this year, as part of their Fairer Futures programme. Victoria tells us why she decided to take on this challenge for Centrepoint: “In terms of why Centrepoint, I have a 16 year old daughter and couldn’t help but compare the foundational support she has in place and takes for granted in life – a warm, safe home; home cooked meals and a loving family vs some of the real challenges some of the young people you support have to face every day. Despite all of this, she has still faced some trials and tribulations through her teenage years. But at least she’s always had a place called home to return to. I couldn’t imagine how tough life would be without all these factors so many of us take for granted. I found the real life stories you shared with us at our kick off immersive event for Fairer Futures to be really shocking and humbling – but also really inspiring and uplifting to see the life redirection offered by Centrepoint - and I just felt a real personal ‘call to action’. I had already signed up for the Chester marathon in January and had no plans to do it for charity. But after attending this event I thought I am doing it anyway, so I might as well see if I can raise some funds. I set a very conservative initial target of £500 which I exceeded within 14 hours – and then I just kept increasing my target by £500. I have raised just shy of £3000 including the £100 fund matching from Nationwide. My marathon didn’t go according to plan. Sickness, cramping, dizziness. Just horrid. I’m 100% certain that had I not committed to running it for Centrepoint I’d have chucked in the towel. But when you run for a cause bigger than yourself, your commitment to cross the finish line takes on a different level of grit and determination.”   If you feel inspired and you’d like to get involved, you can: Donate to Victoria’s fundraising page: https://bit.ly/4eBcpV7 Take on your own challenge: https://bit.ly/4eYFE3U Congratulations on an amazing achievement, Victoria – and thank you for making a vital difference to support our work to end youth homelessness.

Last year, a record of 136,000 young people faced homelessness. Meet Aimee: a rapper, aspiring solicitor and young person living with cerebral palsy. Aimee has written to Chancellor Rachel Reeves asking her to change the benefit rules to Make Work Pay, so vulnerable young people aren’t penalised for working more hours. This World Homeless Day, we want the outdated benefit rules that are unnecessarily trapping young people to end. But we need your help to make sure the Chancellor listens. Add your name and show Aimee we join her call for a fairer benefit system: https://bit.ly/3XZzN7N

    • A quote from Aimee's open letter that reads "This system has a devastating impact on young people in supported accommodation. So many of us are forced to work less, or even give up working completely, because we can’t afford to have our benefits cut. The current rules are preventing us from gaining independence and getting back on our feet."

Young people deserve to reach their full potential. But right now, outdated benefit rules are holding them back - that’s why we have launched our latest campaign: Make Work Pay. Next month’s Budget is a crucial time for the government to end the benefit trap that many young people in supported accommodation are facing and to Make Work Pay – all we need is their commitment. ❗ The problem Under current rules, young people living in supported housing receive Universal Credit for their living costs but Housing Benefit to pay their rent. This contrasts with people living in the private rented sector, who receive the housing element of Universal Credit to support their housing costs. Therefore, when young people living in supported housing start work, their Universal Credit is tapered in line with their earnings. Once their Universal Credit is tapered to nil, their income is reassessed under Housing Benefit rules – a higher rate of 65 per cent. This disincentivises people from working above a certain number of hours and, in some cases, finding employment at all. Right now, if a young person living in supported housing wants to work more hours, their benefits will be cut more than someone living in private rented accommodation – which doesn’t make sense. ✅ The solution If the Chancellor and Treasury team pledge to lower the Housing Benefit taper rate and increase the applicable amount in next month’s Budget, Centrepoint research has calculated the Government could save up to £12 million by getting more people into work and increasing employment opportunities. ❓ Will you help us by asking your MP to talk to the Treasury? Now is a crucial time to act and email your MP: https://bit.ly/3TyRBVI

This time last week, we made our second appearance at Manchester Pride! Colleagues from across the organisation had a great time marching in the parade, cheering, singing, and dancing through the city centre. We know that LGBTQ+ young people are over-represented in the youth homelessness community. akt found that a quarter (24%) of homeless young people identify as LGBT and over three quarters (77%) believe coming out to their parents was the main factor. We believe that it’s so important to continue our work to support LGBTQ+ young people who are not being supported by their families and therefore have nowhere to go.

“When I lay in bed at night, all I would think about is the future, and dream about having a good career and my own home.” Our recent research found that many young people feel like their ambitions are being ignored, and that the lack of stable housing is prohibiting their access to employment. The new government has the opportunity to shift the dial and reprioritise young people again through improving employment support and building more genuinely affordable housing. Thank you to Together - loans, mortgages & finance for supporting us with this research.
