Thank you, Tara Sabre Collier, for an incredible wrap-up of our participation at the The Global Impact Investing Network Forum last week! We are on a mission to maximise the collective efforts of our global community to transform the financial performance, sustainability, and measurability of #impact #investments in emerging markets. Read more⤵
#Africa, #Asia and #Latam account for less than a third of all impact investment allocations despite accounting for about 80% of the world's population. This can be a tough order, given that many large institutional allocators have traditionally bypassed so many low and middle income countries (proportionally speaking). Though, encouragingly in Financial Times last week it said "emerging markets are having a moment". Part of bridging the gap in capital mobilization is tackling the perceived risk, and showing that indeed many of the companies and funds in these markets can deliver commercially and are being under-rated. In fact, my mind still keeps turning around this stat from my friend & colleague Ashish Kumar " 4.4% was the average default rate coming out of the DFI/MDB loan books for the low-income countries category for 1994-2023– 𝟳𝟬% 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 than the implied country sovereign ratings-based default rate of 14.6%". Another part of bridging the gap is through #blendedfinance, de-risking the actual risks through donor and philanthropic facilities, like the ones we work on at Chemonics International Chemonics UK. In addition to defending the merits of capital mobilization at GIIN members day, we had the pleasure of hosting an evening reception at #GIINForum2024 on blended finance, bringing together asset owners, investors, entrepreneurs, and other #impactinvesting ecosystem players this topic. I was proud to highlight how MOBILIST Global USAID Climate Finance for Development Accelerator (USAID CFDA) The RISA Fund are unlocking capital towards the #SDGs in compelling ways. And we were privileged to highlight investees of MOBILIST and CFDA such as Helios Investment Partners ClearFund , Green Guarantee Company Octobre. We were also pleased to welcome our friends Save the Children Global Ventures, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and ImpactA Global and the Blended Finance Collective who added to the litany of examples of driving awesome impact towards adaptation, mitigation and the #UNSDGs while achieving market rate returns. So I tagged all of them for any naysayers or better yet LPs. Thank you to the The Global Impact Investing Network and my awesome team for last week's events and all the efforts towards capital mobilization. Onwards and upwards :)

Chemonics UK was honoured to participate in crucial discussions at the #CHOGM2024 Commonwealth Business Forum in Samoa last week, where our Managing Director Louise Quy and Programme Director Sophia Fernandes met with leaders from across the Commonwealth. At a roundtable on green investment, Louise highlighted Chemonics' work deploying innovative financing solutions for small island developing states, and the importance of women and girls as powerful agents for change. Small island developing states are also big ocean states and crucial custodians of our oceans. Louise chaired a key plenary session on sustainable blue economies with an exceptional panel: Amanda Ellis (Global Institute of Sustainability and Innovation), Kenneth Katafono (TraSeable Solutions Pte Ltd), Howard Politini (Pacific Island Private Sector Organisation), Colin Buckley (British International Investment), and Dr. M Sanjayan (Conservation International). Their insights into enabling environments, human capital, access to finance, and technological innovation for sustainable blue economies were invaluable. We are looking forward to continuing to collaborate with partners towards unlocking innovative climate solutions and green investment in small island developing states and the wider #Commonwealth. We had an incredible experience at the European Evaluation Society (EES) conference in Italy this September, where the theme “Better Together: Collaborative Thought and Action for Better Evaluation” truly resonated. Our MEL Practice was thrilled to lead and convene several sessions - on Bridging Sectors, Harmonising Heterogeneity, Repurposing Hierarchical Card Sorting as a Foundation for Evaluation, and Removing the Euro-Western Lens from Storytelling Techniques - while also attending many others that sparked thought-provoking discussions around inclusion, decolonizing MEL, and the integration of AI. The collaborative spirit of the conference led to interesting reflections, fresh perspectives, and the potential for exciting new partnerships. We left feeling inspired and energized, to continue working together for better, more culturally responsive evaluation and MEL practices. 📌 Last week, Chemonics UK was honoured to host a workshop in Amman focused on “Advancing the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda: Progress, Challenges, and Solutions within the Region.” Bringing together women’s rights organizations, civil society, security sector leaders, and government representatives from Yemen, Jordan, Iraq, and Palestine, this event facilitated meaningful discussions on the evolution of WPS in the region. The workshop reflected on 25 years of progress since #UNSCR 1325’s adoption, considering the UN's critical role and the international push for accountability on National Action Plans (#NAP). ➡ The #Yemen Support Fund and the #Tamasok programme highlighted the incredible work by Yemeni and Jordanian women-led organisations in advancing WPS. Participants also discussed how the region’s recent instability has impacted the WPS agenda, shifting it towards securitisation —a divergence from its foundational focus on peace, demilitarisation, and disarmament. 🤝 It was inspiring to see diverse perspectives, working towards solutions that keep women’s voices at the centre of peace and security in the region. Together, we're committed to advancing WPS in ways that honour its roots and meet the needs of today’s world. Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office ARDD #WomenPeaceSecurity #WPS #ChemonicsUK

🌍 Exciting insights from #CHOGM2024! Chemonics UK's Sophia Fernandes shares her key takeaways on #ClimateFinance, the #BlueEconomy, and #GlobalStandards from the Commonwealth Business Forum. ⤵ A huge thank you to everyone who participated in these crucial discussions.
Have had an incredibly thought-provoking and exciting time with Louise Quy Chemonics UK at the #CHOGM2024 Commonwealth Business Forum talking #climatefinance #blueeconomy #resilience #standards and public-private partnerships. Key learnings: 🔩 Business are already innovating, changing supply chains, inventing new technologies and driving competitors to take up #netzero commitments, governments need to catch up 🪙 Huge amount of capital is ready to be unlocked for climate finance, and need conditions for managed risk and bold, scaleable, well-branded investible initiatives 🏝️ Being in #Samoa brought home that small island states/big ocean states, although small, can be mighty in their legal challenge to big polluters, in their collective influence and in their custodianship of the ocean The existential threat to livelihoods from #climatechange is so present but the collective minds ready to offer solutions are focused and determined. Thank you for the enriching discussions before and during this week Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC) Charlotte Bailey Amanda Ellis Jennifer Pryce Stephen Twigg Tara Sabre Collier B. Integrating trauma-informed approaches in education programming is crucial for enabling educators to support diverse learners in high-risk environments. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office-funded Syria Education Programme (Manahel), provides a prime example of this approach in action: 🔻 "The experience of implementing the Manahel programme both reinforces and augments our knowledge of trauma-informed programme delivery by focusing on individuals’ sense of ownership through community engagement, establishing community networks to promote empowerment, and creating the conditions needed for safe and responsive adaptation." – Riham Jabbar, Deputy Technical Team Lead, SEP 📌 Read more about Chemonics International’s broad experience in applying trauma-informed approaches that enhance outcomes for education in emergencies: https://lnkd.in/du5nUSNj

The International Day of the Girl Child is a global moment to celebrate girls everywhere, amplify their voices, actions, and leadership, and ensure that we are advocating for and achieving the full spectrum of girls' rights. To commemorate this important day, we asked the Tamasok Programme's partners for change the Jordan Youth Innovation Forum and Toward a Better Tomorrow for Development and Empowerment (NAGAT) to share their perspectives on empowering leadership for women and girls. Batool Hashim, Jordan Youth Innovation Forum (pictured below, middle): "I believe it's crucial for projects to be grounded in the principles of equity and equality, ensuring that every step we take uplifts women and girls. As a Project Assistant at JYIF, I’ve seen firsthand how initiatives like the Phoenix Project address gender equity, and how the Tamasok Programme focuses on the empowerment of women, peace, and security in alignment with the JONAP pillars. I’m committed to fostering an environment where women’s voices lead, and their potential knows no bounds." Roaa, Toward a Better Tomorrow for Development and Empowerment (NAGAT) (pictured below, left): "I believe that girls and women are capable of leading generations and ideas. The concept of creating a girl leader means developing her skills in various areas of life so she can be the leader of herself and her world." Darien, Toward a Better Tomorrow for Development and Empowerment (NAGAT) (pictured below, right): "In the age of young girls, we love to listen to each other, which is why peer education is an important part of developing both formal and informal educational processes. As a girl, I enjoy sharing what I learn with the girls around me through peer education."
