The future of Yorkshire’s cities depends on designing and planning neighbourhoods and public spaces with their communities, both present and future, at the heart of every decision. 💚 There were some great conversations at the Yorkshire Emerging Development Hotspots event yesterday, where our Leeds director Leah Stuart joined Joanna van der Veen, Steve Ford, and Adrian Spawforth on a panel exploring how our cities are evolving, across Yorkshire and beyond. For years, urban spaces were designed around commuters - people traveling in for work and leaving at the end of the day. But that’s changing. Now, the focus is on creating cities where people want to live, not just work, and that means rethinking transport, infrastructure, and public spaces to make them truly liveable today. 🏙️ 🌱 🚎 It was also insightful to hear from local council leaders on the opportunities and challenges in their areas - reinforcing how important collaboration is in shaping the future of our Yorkshire cities. Thanks to Place Yorkshire and Sally Gibson for bringing together such a fantastic mix of voices. It’s exciting to be part of the conversation!

🎙️ “Where you live, your health prospects, the climatic resilience of your home, all of these things are interdependent, it’s one single system. And the convergence of all these aspects is accelerating.” Our CEO Stephen O'Malley shares what we mean when we say 'System Thinking', and why both technical excellence and emotional intelligence are vital if we are to have a positive impact for people and place, in a podcast with David Taylor out at MIPIM https://lnkd.in/eq6YWqTj 👇
Editor of NLQ, New London Weekly. Editor/co-owner of Velocity Magazine 🎙️Podcaster - 'Detailer' - commute-sized conversations about the city. Also: Tracks of my Tyres (Spotify) 🎙️ Strategic consultant, ING Media
🎙️ 🚶➡️ Last week I wandered down the Croisette in Cannes with Stephen O'Malley, where he reflected not just on the MIPIM property conference we were both dodging the rain and gilets at, but also Civic Engineers' system thinking, post-riots Dublin, Manchester, housing, joinery - and even an architect spending a month in a cow barn to better know the potential occupants of his designs. 🎙️ 🚶♂️ 🐄 This was for the latest episode of Detailer - the podcast I do with some of the most interesting people shaping our places and cities. 🌳 O'Malley is chief executive of the quickly growing firm, and is passionate about urban infrastructure - but reaches first for nature-based solutions. 🚲 And he'd have seen a lot of that as he rode his bike on the Club Peloton charity cycle ride down to Cannes from London, raising money with 65 other riders for Coram and Cyclists Fighting Cancer in the process. O'Malley reflects on the ups and downs of the ride, the camaraderie, the food, dealing with the lack of sleep, and the forging of new and lasting friendships. 🌆 He talks, too, about his work on the Strangeways Regeneration Framework, getting inspired by working with the late Will Alsop, Urban Splash's Nick Johnson and Tom Bloxham in New Islington, his work with NLA and Opportunity London, and being asked to be part of the taskforce to repair Dublin's centre after the riots. 🇫🇷 There's time to chat about strategies for getting the most out of MIPIM, about the 'patchy' nature of the market, and O'Malley's aspirations both for himself ('I'm just getting started, David') and the firm. 🐮 Oh - and the cows thing. O'Malley recounts the tale of how, a few years back on a residential summer school, he met a Finnish architect who had completed the design of a cow barn. But to really appreciate the cow's needs, the architect lived with them for a month! 💪 Thanks so much for sparing the time to talk to me, Stephen, about such a breadth of projects and topics , and with such clear and infectious drive and enthusiasm. 'It's an absolute burning passion of mine', he says, 'to respect the climate, and deal with that in a much more positive way, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because I believe it adds a huge amount of value to the lives of the people that then get to interact with it and spend time with it' --- Check out the podcast here on Apple: 👉 https://lnkd.in/eM_82AVF Here on Spotify: 👉 https://lnkd.in/e_8gqyqD Here on Amazon: 👉 https://lnkd.in/e3sVAq5X And here on Acast: 👉 https://lnkd.in/e7T5MKEv --- Gareth Atkinson Katrina Davis Andrew Ruck Nick Hanmer Kate Gordon

#MIPIM is over for another year, and what a week we’ve had! 🎇 Gareth Atkinson and Stephen O'Malley made their epic cycle to Cannes with Club Peloton. A massive hats off to them both, this was no easy ride and we’re so proud of them for taking on the challenge (and smashing it) for an incredible cause. Over £7,000 has been raised so far, but there’s still time to contribute 👉 https://lnkd.in/eHB_aRFN Thanks again to our brilliant sponsors this year Bluebeam REDD - Real Estate Design & Development Caytons - A Gallagher Bassett Company Rapport3 On Tuesday, Stephen moderated a session at the Manchester stand on the ‘Strangeways Strategic Regeneration Framework’, which sparked engaging conversations around how the success of Slussen, Stockholm can influence the framework for Strangeways, as told by Linda Thiel from White Arkitekter. You can watch it back here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eYw9Ug3F Katrina Davis & Stephen attended as part of Manchester Invest Partnership delegation, Gareth was part of The London Stand at MIPIM. They caught up with old friends and meet new ones, over lots of pastries, wine and cheese – the French way! Although the weather was turbulent (shout out to Avison Young for saving the day with their branded umbrellas ☂️ ), the conversations were bright and promising. It was also great to support the first ever Place North delegation. It’s clear that MIPIM is still a very important event with a strong agenda. The UK was represented very strongly, particularly London and Manchester. Manchester being one of the UK’s best growth opportunities because of its ambition and collaboration across the GMCA. A huge thank you to everyone we met - #MIPIM2025 has been inspiring and insightful. We’re exciting to continue building on the conversations had and collaborate with other pioneers in the built environment. Next stop UKREiiF and for those of you in the know, there will once again be a Team Civic paella party!! 🥳 Check out the below pictures that capture our jam-packed week… 📸 Until next year... Au revoir! 👋

💭 "Engineers can lead the response to the Building Safety Act" Sam Harland, associate director and structural team leader in London, has shared his insights on the #BuildingSafetyAct in Building Magazine. As has been well documented in recent months, the Building Safety Act is having quite an impact on the property and construction industry. As engineers, we have an important part to play in helping to prepare Gateway submissions on mid to high rise residential development projects. However, perhaps less well documented is the work required on existing High Risk Building (HRB) projects where we are helping clients with their building safety cases. Sam explains more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/e7mc4us3 #BuildingSafetyAct #HighRiskBuildings #BuildingSafetyCase #SaferConstructionIndustry
