The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is the UK government department responsible for policy and regulations on environmental, food and rural issues. We are responsible for policy and regulations on: - the natural environment, biodiversity, plants and animals - sustainable development and the green economy - food, farming and fisheries - animal health and welfare - environmental protection and pollution control - rural communities and issues Although we only work directly in England, we work closely with the devolved administrations in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and we generally lead on negotiations in the EU and internationally. The UK’s first ever Special Representative for Nature has been appointed. In a landmark first, Ruth Davis OBE, a leading environmental policy expert will take on the joint Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Defra role. She will work with UK Government and stakeholders to drive forward the UK’s international leadership on nature recovery. Ruth has over 25 years’ experience working on nature and climate issues, previously supporting the UK Government at COP26 and working with the some of the UK’s biggest nature organisations including RSPB and Plantlife International. She holds a MSc in Botany and Plant Biology from Reading University and was awarded an MBE in 2014 for services to the environment and an OBE for public service in 2022. The Government looks forward to working with Ruth, whose extensive knowledge and expertise should help deliver on our commitments to put nature on the road to recovery. She will be on the ground in Cali as environment ministers gather for the first day of COP16 in Colombia.
