📢 Business leaders urge the UK government to set a world-leading example by setting ‘ambitious’ and ‘investable’ climate targets. Read the full letter coordinated by the UK Business Group Alliance for Net Zero (BGA) ➡ https://lnkd.in/ePcfRGCd More than 50 businesses, investors and financial institutions have signed a letter to the Prime Minister, put forward by the BGA, urging the government to reassert its climate leadership on the world stage 🌍 With the #COP29 conference just weeks away, signatories including the UK Corporate Leaders Groups (CLG UK), Unilever, SSE plc, IKEA and BT Group are calling for the UK to be one of the first countries to announce an ‘ambitious and investable’ Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for 2035 🎯   The letter states that the NDC must align with the Paris Agreement and the UK’s 2050 #NetZero emissions target - and be underpinned by credible delivery mechanisms that encourage other countries to follow suit. 🤝 By working together as businesses, investors, financial institutions and government, we can be a powerful catalyst for global change. To coincide with the letter, CLG UK has also published a report that shows how the UK can regain its climate leadership position over the next few years through five key actions. If implemented, these policies will close the 2030 delivery gap: 🔌Deliver on electrification: incentivise and facilitate large-scale electrification, while phasing out the use of fossil fuels 🤝 Deliver on markets: support decarbonisation through market creation 💡 Deliver on skills: plan and prepare for a future-fit workforce 🏠 Deliver on homes: implement comprehensive and stable policies to ensure UK homes are comfortable, energy efficient and low carbon 🍃 Align climate and nature targets: make climate change mitigation, adaptation and nature targets mutually reinforcing Beverley Cornaby, Chair of the BGA and Director of CLG UK, said: 🗣 “If the Government can accelerate policy action towards achieving its 2030 climate target, the UK has an opportunity for growth, innovation, investment and to build resilience. The private sector stands ready to work with policy makers in delivering this, with over 50 signatories calling for a new era of UK climate leadership, showing what we already knew: businesses have consistently shown their support for net zero ambition and action. The UK government needs to demonstrate leadership in this decade of delivery."  #BGALetter #BGANetZero #CLGUK #2035NDC #EnergyTransition #climateleadership #climateaction #businessaction #naturepositive

The world needs to accelerate its climate action urgently. We’re working with policymakers to drive this. We’ve joined leading businesses to call for the UK Government to reassert the country’s climate leadership position, and commit to an ambitious and investable Nationally Determined Contribution plan which must: ➡️ Align with business targets ➡️ Align with UK policy and implementation plans ➡️ Align with the Paris Agreement and associated 2050 net zero targets Our technology is ready to make a huge difference: it can drive the #decarbonisation of cement, which is responsible for more than 50% of the carbon footprint in new building projects. But it must be paired with government action to make a difference at scale. We stand firm in our commitments to lead the industry, in collaboration with policymakers, to advance #NetZero by decarbonising one of the world’s most polluting industries. Thanks to fellow signatories: UK Business Group Alliance for Net Zero (BGA) and led by the UK Corporate Leaders Group (CLG). #BGALetter #BGANetZero #Construction #ParisAgreement #COP29 | Corporate Leaders Groups | Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)

Without a G20-led massive, global mobilisation to cut all greenhouse gas emissions starting today, the continuation of current policies will lead to a catastrophic temperature rise of up to 3.1°C - affecting society, ecosystems, and economies worldwide, according to the latest UN Environment Programme (UNEP) #EmissionsGapReport (see below in comments).   We have the technology today to turn this around - it is simply a matter of will.    ➡ We need to come together to legislate, finance and deploy all available solutions at speed and scale, to meet the 1.5°C commitment of the Paris Agreement. ➡ Currently responsible for almost 8% of all global emissions, the cement industry can make a huge contribution - by accelerating the adoption of a range of #LowCarbon technology solutions which are available today and halving CO2 emissions by 2030.    Ahead of #COP29, countries and companies need to commit to bridge the gap between rhetoric and reality and take ‘concrete’ action.   #FutureOfCement #SustainableConstruction #ParisAgreement #NetZero

Nations must close huge emissions gap in their new climate pledges and deliver immediate action or the goal of keeping warming below 1.5°C is lost. During the launch of the 2024 #EmissionsGap report, UNEP head Inger Andersen called for a global mobilisation on a scale never seen before to close the gap and avoid climate catastrophe. https://lnkd.in/ewCTtwVw

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies have promise for the future, but to combat climate change we need solutions that work now 🌎    As outlined in POLITICO’s recent article, "Leak imperils a key climate technology", there are very real risks that are associated with carbon capture and storage. Additionally, #CCS’ scalability challenges and its high costs may be distracting from solutions that can #decarbonise industries today.     🔹 Our focus is scaling existing, cost effective #LowCarbon cement technologies that do not require dedicated infrastructure, with minimal additional cost and do not substantially increase energy demand.   🔹 We have already delivered millions of tonnes of low-carbon cement and will continue to do so. Real solutions like ours need more attention. Let’s decarbonise today.   #FutureOfCement #Innovation #Technology #Sustainability #NetZero

Climate tech is in its deployment era and we’re proud to be on the frontline 🌍 We’re named in Breakthrough Energy 's 2024 State of the Transition report as a key player in #NetZero innovation. Low-carbon cement is driving scalable transformation in #construction, and we’ve been at the forefront of advancing this decarbonisation for two decades.   The report also highlights how climate tech offers a unique prospect for governments as it provides solutions both for hitting immediate political climate goals, and for paving the way for future economic prosperity.   The future is optimistic; we just need governments and industry to keep backing #CleanTech innovation.

Is #climatetech entering its "deployment era"? Bill Gates, in the latest Breakthrough Energy annual report, seems to think so. Its worth a read: 🔸 Corporations are now “future-seizing.” Companies across industries are moving beyond compliance, investing early in clean technologies to strengthen their operations, boost resilience, and position themselves as leaders in sustainability. American Airlines and Siemens are called out in this report. 🔸Innovations in clean steel and net-zero cement are driving a transformation in manufacturing, the sector responsible for 30% of global emissions. Companies like LuxWall, Inc. and Ecocem Global are key players. 🔸In #fusion energy, there are several approaches to improving the core technology. Breakthrough spotlight the potential to make the high-temperature superconducting magnets more efficient - good example of #deeptech innovation being important. 🔸 Critical point that stood out to me is that - whilst the “green premium” is starting to turn into profitable business opportunities - this is NOT done in a vacuum. There is limited natural "market" for green energy; clean technologies often lack a built-in demand, making policy and government support essential. 🔸 Governments (UK is called out) are seeing that net zero / climate tech / clean energy (whatever you want to call it) sits at an attractive intersection of promising future economic development whilst hitting political / sovereign goals... ...which isn't that different to what we're seeing happen in #quantum.
