New price cap (between 1 October to 31 December 2024) announced this morning - for an average bill the new cap is is £1717 (based on typical use of an average household on their supplier’s standard default tariff) Average direct debit unit rates for energy; ELECTRICITY - Unit rate: 24.50p per kWh, Standing charge: 60.99p per day GAS - Unit rate: 6.24p per kWh, Standing charge: 31.66p per day I shared some thoughts on what this means for the energy industry, our customers and some steps the Government can take now to help people who are struggling this winter ⬇️

Energy bills are currently at the lowest point they've been since the energy crisis began, nearly three years ago. Unfortunately they're still higher than they were when the crisis began in 2021, and the forecast for the price cap announcement tomorrow is that they will begin to rise again in October. This is worrying news for far too many people. Energy debt now stands at a record £3.2 billion, and I suspect that even this may understate the problem. People are struggling - and high debt levels are an issue for everyone, as ultimately it's recouped from across all bill payers. The price of energy is likely to remain volatile (and above above pre crisis levels) for some time. Gas is bought and traded on the international market, and is at the mercy of global events. We use a lot of gas in the UK - around 80%+ of our homes use gas boilers, and gas powers about 35% of our electricity - so price increases have quite an impact. The focus has to be on how to get help to people who need it most, and how to reduce our demand for gas. Investing in clean power generation to reduce our reliance on imported gas is crucial - and the Govt has taken significant action here. Setting up Mission Control for clean energy, GB Energy and the national wealth fund, increasing the AR6 budget & taking action to tackle planning barriers are hugely significant. We're looking forward to seeing what the Government does to support clean energy technologies like CCUS and long duration storage. But arguably one of the most difficult challenges is going to be engaging with people about how we use energy in our homes and businesses. Using less (& adjusting how/when we use it) is as important as investing in clean power generation. We need better consumer protections as well information, advice and support as we move to increasingly electrified way of life - & industry is keen to work with Govt on this. The pressing issue for this winter is affordability. At Energy UK we've been talking to Govt about doing 3 things for this winter: 1) Reduce the burden of policy costs on bills - Funding a portion of existing policy costs through general govt spending would result in immediate bill reductions for all households. 2) Rebalance the remaining costs on bills - The policy costs that stay on bills should be spread more fairly and be better aligned with Net Zero aims - a rebalancing levy that shifts a proportion of domestic policy costs remaining on electricity bills to gas could be a good option, with the aim of achieve a ratio of electricity to gas prices of around 3:1 so that low-carbon technologies like heat pumps are cheaper to run than fossil fuel alternatives. 3) Improve targeted support - Steps one and two will result in lower bills for the vast majority of households. Paying for energy will still be simply too unaffordable for too many people. The quickest, most pragmatic way to improve short-term support is by doubling WHD this winter.
