A useful report published last year by BVA BDRC highlights findings on access to finance for ethnic minority businesses in the UK. Findings suggest that, as with the wider business population, ethnic minority businesses are typically small in size but they are more ambitious. The majority had plans for growth with around 6 in 10 being categorised as “ambitious risk takers” compared to just over one quarter of SMES overall. They were also more likely to be involved in growth including taking on staff, developing new products and services and trading overseas. But, ethnic minority businesses were more likely to describe themselves as struggling compared to SMEs overall, and a higher share had injected personal funds into the business due to need. Ethnic minority businesses were found to be as likely as SMEs in general to be using traditional forms of external finance. A higher share were borrowing more than pre-pandemic and they were also more worried about re-payment. Based on their demographic profile ethnic minority businesses were more likely to be “permanent non-borrowers” with no interest in accessing external finance. But, a higher share than SMEs in general were planning to apply for finance. Notably, however, they were less confident that their application would be successful.
