Y13 A- Level Student at LAE Tottenham | Aspiring Chemical Engineer

Hey Network Earlier this summer I had the privileged opportunity to complete a research internship as part of the Nuffield Research Placements programme at FairHeat , a leading heat network Consultantcy. I was working under consulting engineers and I was tasked with a project of creating 2 heat networks and conducting a comparison between them . I learnt about the work that chemical engineers do , specifically heat networks and district heating systems . This experience also strengthened my research skills as I was also tasked with writing a research report and poster . I also a presented my findings to a team of engineers , improving my presentation skills in the process Overall my research internship at Fairheat was an amazing experience , and it has opened my eyes to the careers in chemical engineering . It has fuelled my desire to pursue a degree in Chemical engineering and enter the sector .

🏆 We are excited to share that, in collaboration with Notting Hill Genesis, our project at Windmill Park has been shortlist for the HVR Awards 2024 - District Heating Project of the Year!  🌟The Windmill Park project exemplifies FairHeat's commitment to excellence in the optimisation of existing heat networks. At the core of this project's success lies our collective ability to turn a struggling network into a model of efficiency, a key factor behind the recognition received. The real success though has been the positive impact to end users, improving the everyday like of residents. Daniel Perager, Head of Heat Energy and Water, Notting Hill Genesis comments: “The Windmill Park project presented a huge challenge to us as a team as there were significant issues that would not be easy to solve. We were confident when partnering with FairHeat that together we would find innovative solutions that would transform the struggling network into a model of efficiency.” “We were able to do this through strategic investment – replacing equipment, updating the heat interface units and introducing controls and measures to boost water quality. Most notably the system is future proofed to allow for further improvements to carbon efficiency.” “It’s great to see the benefit of this project on the everyday lives of residents.” Well done to all teams involved 👏 we look forward to celebrating together at the award ceremony 🥂 . #hvrawards24 #heatnetworks #districtheating #projects #collaboration #optimisation #efficiency #performance #futureproofed

Improvements in HIU performance, reduced system outages, consistent and dependable heat supply for residents and much more… A 13-year-old development comprising 182 dwellings faced the persistent issue of elevated heat losses. Recognising the need for change, Notting Hill Genesis partnered with FairHeat to address these challenges, and secured funding from the Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES) Demonstrator. I am incredibly proud to share that all 20 of us completed the Three Peaks Challenge in 23 hours and 55 minutes! 🏔️⏱️   The challenge was not only a test of physical endurance, it was a testament to the power of teamwork and resilience. We’ve raised an incredible £2,833 for two very important charities: National Energy Action and the Rainy Day Trust. These charities are doing phenomenal work to combat fuel poverty and support those in need, and we are honoured to contribute to their missions.   Reflecting on the challenge, a few key takeaways stand out:   🤝 Teamwork: Every single member played a crucial role. We motivated each other, shared laughs, and offered support during the most difficult moments - torrential rain at 3am on Snowdon to name one! Only 40% of teams complete the challenge in 24 hours, and without the unity we showed we would not have achieved our goal!   🧠 Mental Attitude: There were moments when fatigue set in but our collective positivity and encouragement helped us push through the toughest parts.    💪 Physical Challenge: The Three Peaks Challenge tested our physical and mental limits far more than we had anticipated, but our strength and determination saw us through. We each completed over 60,000 steps and walked a total of 37 km with an ascent of 3064 m.    A massive thank you to FairHeat for sponsoring this challenge. Without their encouragement and support, this event would not have been possible.    Thank you to everyone who supported us, donated, and cheered us on. Your generosity and encouragement made all the difference. 🌍💙

🌟 At FairHeat, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace where everyone feels valued and empowered. This Pride Month, we were proud to see Ethan St. Catherine, Graduate Engineer at FairHeat, lead the charge in promoting LGBTQ+ inclusivity throughout our organisation and the wider heat network industry. 🌈 In addition to internal intiatives, Ethan organised and chaired a webinar for The Diverse Heat Network, bringing together key industry speakers to discuss the ongoing challenges and strategies for LGBTQ+ inclusion. Continuing the conversation beyond Pride month, Ethan published his latest blog where he shares valuable perspectives and calls for sustained allyship and action. The blog not only highlights the critical discussions from the webinar but also outlines practical steps we can all take to support our LGBTQ+ colleagues and peers. Well done Ethan! 👏

🌈 Pride Month may be over, but the conversation around LGBTQ+ inclusion shouldn't have to end. I'm excited to share a blog post I've written about the useful insights and key takeaways from a recent webinar I chaired, on behalf of The Diverse Heat Network. This event featured a panel discussion around LGBTQ+ inclusion in the heat network industry. The panel consisted of various LGBTQ+ professionals across the industry, including Meike Imberg, Rachael Gilbert (representing Building Equality), and Lewis McKenzie (representing Pride in Energy). Special thanks also go to Tala Baadarani for her amazing support in organizing the event. 👉 Read the full blog post below to learn about: - Why LGBTQ+ inclusion is still relevant in our industry - Common experiences of LGBTQ+ employees in the workplace - Practical steps we can all take to be better allies 🏳️🌈 Whether you're a decision-maker or just starting out in your career, every effort counts. Let’s continue to spread awareness, foster inclusivity and stand up for our LGBTQ+ community, not just during Pride Month, but all year round. Your engagement and support can make a real difference. 📖 Read the full blog post here: https://lnkd.in/eA2ZgF_X 📽 Watch the webinar here: https://lnkd.in/e37VCVDF

⚠ The functioning of ambient loops in heating or combined heating and cooling applications is currently not well understood in industry. Unlike Heat Interface Units (HIUs), which operate in a generally consistent manner, dwelling-level heat pumps have significantly different design needs and implications, such as fixed flow versus variable flow systems, cylinders for hot water storage, and flexibility for heating and cooling.     Despite their potential, there is a significant gap in understanding and reliable design guidance for ambient loop systems. To bridge this gap, I am conducting research as part of my role at FairHeat to ultimately support industry and enable guidance for designers.     📣 I'm looking for suppliers/manufacturers of water source dwelling level heat pumps to provide information/datasheets on their products, predominantly the following:     💧 Coefficient of performance (COP): What are the COPs over varying input water temperatures (for ambient loops, generally between 15°C - 30°C), and outlet water temperatures?  ✍ Manufacturers schematics: What is the recommended ancillary equipment (eg. Valves, cylinders, buffers) and installation schematic for the heat pump?  🔥 Control: Can the unit modulate flow during heating and cooling, and is the unit hot water priority?  🏭 Embodied carbon: What is the embodied carbon of the heat pump in CO2e/kg?     ➡ Please reach out to me if you have any info to share or just want to chat more about this!
