Great to have the extra helping hands from Collinson earlier this month for a volunteer day. Sorting through food and packing deliveries ready for redistribution, it’s a fun hands on way to learn about the problems of food waste and to see how many organisations and charities require extra food support through our services. Fighting hunger, tackling food waste and supporting volunteers back into employment
About us
We are the region’s leading food distribution charity. We fight hunger in our community by tackling food waste. Established in 2002, our team of volunteers save c.100 tonnes of good quality, in-date surplus food each week and redistribute it to organisations supporting the most vulnerable across our region. There are 5 key elements to our work: We feed people in crisis. Food poverty is on the increase. We reach hungry people in the region from all demographics: children living in poverty, isolated elderly people, victims of domestic violence, refugees and asylum seekers, homeless people, and low-income families struggling to put food on the table. We deliver surplus food from the food industries and prevent it from ending up in landfill or going to waste. It is 17 times better for the planet to get surplus food to people than the next best option, use it for animal feed. We empower our volunteers who are the lifeblood of our organisation. Our 150 incredible volunteers sort and pack food ready for transportation, assist on deliveries, drive vans and e-cargo bikes and maintain the warehouse. Often they find us through our community projects and are on a journey to get a job. We’re helping our volunteers become more employable. Our Fareshare futures programme is for people far from the employment market, providing accredited training and experience. Last year, we helped 21 volunteers find paid work. We’re lowering our emissions. In 2021 we diverted 1090 tonnes of food from being put into landfill – our model is a highly green and efficient way to manage surplus food. We have introduced an electric van and an e-cargo bike. They allow us to deliver more food whilst decreasing air pollution and our carbon emissions plus they cost less to run.

This week, His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester unveiled the commemorative plaques on our new fridge and freezer units in our Surrey Depot, to mark FareShare Sussex & Surrey’s important work to fight hunger and food waste. "The newly opened storage has increased our capacity to allow us to accept more chilled and frozen food from our suppliers. This in turn will allow us to redistribute more food to meet the growing needs of the charities and community groups we partner with." says Dan Slatter, CEO of FareShare Sussex & Surrey. We were delighted to have local suppliers Host Hospitality, KFC UK & Ireland and Barfoots of Botley Ltd present on the day. Read more in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/eXYpnpz3 FareShare UK

Today is International Day of Charity. This day was created with the purpose of raising awareness and giving charities more of a platform for the work they do, which is why we'd love to give a shout out to our charity partner FareShare Sussex & Surrey. A lot of research points to the positive benefits of #volunteering for mental health. That's why it was great meeting up with Oakleaf Enterprise, an organisation supporting and empowering people with mental health needs. During their visit to our Guildford warehouse yesterday, we were able to share what work we do at FareShare Sussex & Surrey and explore ways that we can collaborate on improving the mental wellbeing of our community. 🔎 A frequently asked question we get is where does our food come from? We are delighted to receive donations of high quality fresh produce from local organisations like SHRUB. Their food is sourced locally and seasonally for restaurants and chefs, so crunchy organic leaves can end up on the table for people who may not otherwise have access to it. 🥗💚 #surplusfood #organic #donations #healthy
Some amazing veg and greens - gratefully received. Organic lettuces, fresh herbs, Japanese leaves, kale and chard. Thank you SHRUB we'll put this all to great use here at FareShare Sussex & Surrey 🌿🌞
