FaulknerBrowns has been shortlisted for Retail and Leisure Architect of the Year. Earlier this year BD announced all the architects who made it on to the shortlists for our prestigious annual Architect of the Year Awards. Now we are shining the spotlight on each category in turn and publishing a selection of the images that impressed the judges. The Newcastle upon Tyne-based practice has a strong pedigree in sports, leisure and retail buildings. Ravelin Sports Centre at the University of Portsmouth has an operational energy consumption lower than any other equivalent UK sports centre, according to the practice. In London, Lee Valley Ice Centre re-uses treated melt water both within the building and in the surrounding landscape. The entry is completed by the renovation of Grainger Market in Newcastle. https://lnkd.in/ez8bk8bU #architecture #AYAs #AYAs20in24

Fantastic to be involved in this exciting Velodrome project for Ireland. Over the years, we have seen the strong correlation our velodromes have demonstrated between facilities and success on the track. We look forward to bringing this world-class centre to Irish athletes as part of our wider masterplan for the Sport Ireland Campus. “It’s exactly the sort of continued investment that is absolutely crucial for boosting participation from grassroots levels to elite athletes. We’re all enjoying the Olympics, and this will only enhance high-performing Irish cyclers’ chances of international, Olympic and Paralympic medals in the future.” Dr. Una May, Sport Ireland CEO Arup LDA Design O'Herlihy Access Consultancy (OHAC) Hoare Lea Seamus Monahan & Partners iAcoustics Cogent Associates Ireland DCON Safety Consultants Limited
National Velodrome and Badminton Centre given green light by Ministers Martin and Byrne! 🚴♀️ 🏸 The facility will comprise of a 250 metre cycling track and up to 12 Badminton Courts in the in-track area, in addition to spectator seating and ancillary facilities. It will be located in the National Sports Campus in Blanchardstown and is scheduled to be completed in 2027 which will mean that our track cyclists, in particular, will no longer need to travel abroad to train. Great to see West Denton one step closer to construction 🏊♂️ Morgan Sindall Construction Newcastle City Council
💦Splashtastic! Plans for a brand-new leisure centre and swimming pool took a huge step forward today. Morgan Sindall Construction have been appointed as the council’s key construction partner to build the new development on the former site of the old West Denton swimming pool. 🏊♀️The showpiece building will boast an eight-lane 25m swimming pool, a 17m training pool, sports hall, gym, café, children’s play area and library. Like many other levelling up projects across the country, the cost of building the centre has risen to £28m due to inflation but the council has secured its future with a contribution from Sport England and a further donation from the council – all added to £19.8m of levelling up funding. 👷♀️Site preparations are expected to start within weeks so construction can begin. It’s expected the new centre will open in 2026. A bit later than planned but better late than never! 👏Thanks to the residents and all the groups who have played a valuable part in getting this exciting project off the ground.
