We support and empower Fife's lone parents and families in need for better todays and brighter tomorrows

About us

Fife Gingerbread supports lone parent, vulnerable and disadvantaged families across Fife. We help those who need help most, and give a voice to those who are not heard. Our ethos is Engage - Support - Progress, working holistically and at a pace that suits the parent and family. In 2017 we reached 30 years of helping families, in that time going from a grassroots organisation to the largest independent families and children support charity in Fife. We actively seek and plug gaps in local provision through various projects, with alleviating child poverty at the core of our work.

This week, we had the opportunity to attend the launch of Gingerbread’s #FixTheCMS report at the House of Lords. The findings align closely with our own #TransformingChildMaintenance research: the child maintenance system is failing families across the UK. Key issues include delays, inaccurate calculations, and a lack of support for domestic abuse survivors. ➡️ Read our research: https://lnkd.in/eUqjknPw ➡️ And Gingerbread’s report: https://lnkd.in/ec6Q-Pwh We are working with IPPR Scotland, Fife Gingerbread and single parents in Scotland to call for urgent reform. We’re campaigning for children’s rights to financial support and better protection for survivors of domestic abuse. At the launch, we heard from a single parent who shared her powerful story of post-separation and abuse, empowered by Gingerbread's support. Her experience (see excerpt below) reflects the reality of so many single parents accessing our services across Scotland, highlighting the widespread nature of these challenges. We also heard from UK Minister for Social Security and Disabilities, Sir Stephen Timms, who acknowledged the failings of the CMS and the need for improvements. He shared that the DWP consultation report and proposed reforms to Direct Pay will be published soon. We look forward to reading the report and continuing to work alongside Gingerbread and MPs to advocate for reform. • Last year we supported 834 families through our projects, with a team of 42 staff alongside an army of volunteers making this possible. Poverty and trauma are the common threads that connect the families, and our work is grounded in tackling child poverty… The challenge we face is that no matter how many services we continue to deliver or projects we design, the systemic issues are persistent…’ Laura Millar, CEO of Fife Gingerbread joined the Panel at the Roberston Trust event yesterday where John Swinney outlined his Government’s approach to eradicating child poverty. In the next few weeks, we will be launching our new strategy and we want you to be part of it. Please contact info@fifegingerbread.org.uk to find out more.

Thank you to all our grant holders, the First Minister of Scotland and Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice for joining us this morning for engaging, open and honest conversations around what's needed to deliver lasting and sustainable change on poverty and trauma in Scotland.   As an independent funder, we are committed to amplifying the voices of our partners, ensuring their experiences and insights are helping to inform solutions and drive social change.    Poverty is not inevitable and today reaffirmed our shared belief that change is possible. We look forward to keeping the conversation going and building solutions together.
