Great to see these Geodesign Barriers in action, keeping flood waters away from the Ironbridge community. We shared this as a case study a little while back >> https://lnkd.in/eXEYwmRw
The C184 Heavy Duty Flood Barriers are back in action at Ironbridge, as part of the Environment Agency's efficient flood response efforts. After several days of heavy rainfall, river levels along the River Severn have risen considerably, prompting the deployment of 250 meters of temporary barriers, each standing 1.8 meters tall. This well-rehearsed operation has been in place since 2007, when the barriers were first introduced. The situation remains fluid, with the river expected to peak between 4.7 and 5.0 meters by Saturday morning. Additional barriers are prepared to be deployed over the weekend if needed, as the risk of flooding to local properties, roads, and farmland continues to rise. We're proud to see our barriers in action, helping protect the community during such critical times. Stay safe, and follow local guidance on flood precautions. *Video courtesy of Env Agency Midlands. While my daughter managed to make it to school this morning, the school bus driver had to take an alternative and unfamiliar route to avoid the rising floodwaters. With additional flood warnings in place, we're anxiously awaiting her safe return home. Tenbury Wells, a town I've called home for most of my life, has experienced its fair share of devastating floods in recent times. The increasing frequency of these "100-year floods" has taken a toll on local residents and businesses. Despite a flood scheme being proposed back in 2019(?), we're still waiting for any tangible progress even though we were promised that the project would be underway this year. As a local, I've witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by the community during these events. The scramble for ineffective sandbags, while a temporary solution, is not enough to address the long-term flood risk. It's disheartening to see the same cycle of flooding and recovery continue year after year. The image depicts Market Street, Tenbury Wells, during the 2007 flood, which was considered a 'once-in-a-century' event at the time. Sadly, this extreme weather occurrence has become more frequent, with a further five major flooding incidents impacting the community since then. Simon. Flood plain in action in Northumberland after last night's downpour...
After a night of heavy rain, the River Coquet has thoroughly connected with its flood plain this morning. The village of Rothbury lies downstream where the valley narrows in on both sides and would be devastated if this volume of water didn’t have somewhere to spread out and dissipate. This illustrates the immense value of this particular ecosystem service in both financial and human terms.
