We are working towards a fairer, greener, healthier and more economically sound future for all in Lewisham.
About us
Lewisham is a vibrant and culturally diverse borough. This reflected in all aspects of daily life, from the response to the pandemic where the community rallied to support our most vulnerable residents, to the 170 languages spoken in our homes, schools and businesses. We have a rich history of welcoming people from all over the world and are proud to be recognised as the UK’s first Borough of Sanctuary, for our work in championing the rights of refugees and migrants. As we plan ahead, we are working towards a fairer, greener, healthier and more economically sound future for all in Lewisham. This means continuing our efforts to tackle climate change for generations to come; ensuring that good health and wellbeing is equally accessible to everyone; and safeguarding local jobs and up-skilling residents with tools they need to succeed. Building on the community spirit and activism that has been so prevalent in recent years, we are committed to creating a Future Lewisham we can all have a part in.

We have reaffirmed our commitment to being anti-racist and promoting equality across the organisation, by signing a national charter. The Anti-Racism Charter, drawn up by trade union Unison, is aimed at tackling racism in the public sector. It sets out a series of commitments for organisations to implement, including HR policies and processes; training for staff and actions for leaders to take. Mayor of Lewisham, Brenda Dacres, said: “We’re proud to sign Unison’s anti-racism charter, which reflects our council’s values of inclusion and accountability. "Lewisham is a proudly diverse borough, as is our workforce, and we have a long and distinguished history of standing up to racism and tackling inequality in all its forms. I’m pleased to put on record our commitment to being an anti-racist workplace and to work towards fulfilling the pledges it sets out.” UNISON London regional secretary, Jo Galloway, said: “This is a significant step by Lewisham Council, which should help address any inequalities faced by staff at work. “Racism has no place in public services. The union will continue working with the council to ensure these commitments are fully implemented.” The Charter builds on work already happening across the organisation, and the Council looks forward to working with Unison to monitor progress against the full set of commitments. The full Charter can be viewed on Unison’s website: https://lnkd.in/ewxB-5CM
