#Research #Engagement #Digital #Innovations #Subsurface Yesterday, with my fantastic colleague Viviana Angely Bastidas Melo, we had the privilege to present part of our #DigitalCitiesforChange research (led by Jennifer Schooling) to an engaging group of #international participants at the Geospatial: Government Digital Service’s Digital Subsurface Symposium held in Newcastle. Our presentation focused on: “Data and digital tools for decision-making in the built environment. A socio-technical perspective.” The event was great, with lots of good discussions, questions and provocations. I observed a strong sense of community to improve digital innovations for the subsurface. Many thanks to Holger Kessler and the team at Geospatial: Government Digital Service! Looking forward to future enagements. • We were delighted to take some of our international delegates from this week's Digital Subsurface Symposium to Digital Catapult's 5G Immersive Lab Eldon Square , Newcastle upon Tyne this morning. The team experienced how 5G and impressive immersive technology solutions could be used in subsurface infrastructure management, such as through creating realistic training environments for roles where accessing the actual locations would be difficult or prohibitively expensive. Many thanks to the 5G Immersive Lab team for their brilliant demonstration of cutting-edge applications and their pivotal role in breaking down the barriers to digital adoption in the North East.

  • That's a wrap! We'd like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who joined us from across the globe for the Digital Subsurface Symposium in Newcastle upon Tyne these past two days.   The connections established and knowledge exchanged during this international gathering will significantly influence how we collectively manage critical underground infrastructure across our nations in the years ahead.   It was truly inspiring to collaborate with public sector organisations worldwide at various stages of their digital subsurface journey—whether considering a NUAR-type service, actively building one, or having already implemented such systems. The discussions were exceptionally constructive, open and thought-provoking throughout.   We're really excited that we’ve agreed shared principles for successful delivery—a tangible outcome that demonstrates the value of international collaboration in this vital sector. We look forward to sharing our learnings more widely in the future.     Our deepest thanks goes to all participants, and speakers who contributed to making this event a success. We look forward to the innovative solutions and partnerships that will undoubtedly emerge from these conversations as we continue to work together to transform underground asset management.

The Mersey Forest’s Natural Flood Management (NFM) team, which works to create effective and sustainable flood prevention and reduction measures, have been using Bluesky’s 12.5cm aerial imagery and height data to support their projects. Using Bluesky’s data, made available free-at-point-of-use via the Geospatial: Government Digital Service APGB contract, the Mersey Forest can create flood management interventions that can then be introduced to landowners and community groups. The aerial data enables clear plans to be shared with contractors and landowners for cost effective flood management solutions that are sympathetic to the natural environment. Rob Dyer, NFM Manager, Mersey Forest said: “Using The 12.5cm aerial photography and height data is great because it offers us a level of detail we need to create an accurate desktop appraisal assessing opportunities to share with landowners” Read the full case study, and more, here: https://lnkd.in/dpv4NQ8g #aerialimagery #aerialphotography #geospatialdata #heightdata #floodmanagement

  • In January, the Secretary of State for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology announced a new digital centre of government. This centre will bring together expertise from GDS, the Central Digital and Data Office, the Incubator for AI, and the Geospatial Commission into one unified home. The Government Digital Service will lead the delivery of a blueprint for a modern digital government https://lnkd.in/eEYua4qP. This change from the Independent Commission to the new digital centre in setting the UK Geospatial Strategy highlights the crucial role of geospatial data in supporting government missions. The Board of Commissioners held their final meeting in January, after seven years of advocating for geospatial data in Government. Our team, as part of the Government Digital Service, will continue to drive innovation and enable a modern digital government through the application of geospatial data.  #DigitalTransformation #Innovation #GeospatialData #ModernGovernment
