About us
We turn human stories into extraordinary spaces, sparking new narratives and helping places evolve and thrive. We are Gillespies, a diverse, free-thinking team of landscape architects, landscape planners, masterplanners, and urban designers based in London, Oxford, Manchester, Leeds and Abu Dhabi. For over 60 years, we've designed with nature to create exceptional spaces where stories come to life and nature thrives. From intimate rooftop gardens to expansive city masterplans, we create unique settings that bring people together, offering unforgettable experiences and fostering a deep harmony between people and the environment. Our approach is context-driven and grounded in the principles of regenerative design. We draw inspiration from a site's natural assets, people, and culture to create authentic places with interconnected ecosystems that are both resilient and sustainable. The resulting places are personal. They’re the product of nature and people in balance and the setting for unique stories to unfold. Notable projects include Elephant Park, Television Centre in White City, Google HQ’s new rooftop garden and several large-scale international masterplans. All benefit from a global view: the team’s broad cultural perspective brings informed, unbiased creativity to even the most specific micro-ecology. Expertise: Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Masterplanning, Landscape Planning (LVIA, EIA, DCO, Expert Witness, Development Planning) and Wayfinding and Signage. Areas of Experience: Residential and mixed-use developments, garden community and growth strategies, high street regeneration, green regeneration, green spaces, parks and public realm design, sports facilities, hotel landscapes, campus design for education and healthcare centres, television studios, regional masterplans for tourism developments, rooftop gardens, winter gardens, energy and utility, airports, museum and civic landscapes.

Partner Tom Walker had a fantastic time running his annual seminar for Leeds Beckett University landscape postgraduate students last week! The session focused on professional practice, with a primary focus on the business side of being a #LandscapeArchitect - something Tom calls the 3Bs: "Beauty, Brains, and Business." As landscape architects, we must be artists, skilled technicians, and savvy business professionals to succeed in business. Tom covered key topics such as business structures, operational costs, sources of work, winning projects, managing them effectively, and navigating current opportunities and challenges, alongside plenty of real-world insights from #Gillespies. The students worked on practical exercises to reinforce their learning, and they did really well! Tom said "It was inspiring to engage with such a talented group, but I just wish more people would #ChooseLandscape. I ran this seminar for 40+ students! So, to my fellow landscape professionals, let’s continue to support the Landscape Institute's #ChooseLandscape campaign and inspire the next generation." ##Landscapearchitecture #LI #Landscapedesign #placemaking #teaching #knowledgesharing

Gillespies recently participated in the UK–Uzbekistan–Türkiye Infrastructure Partnership Conference in Tashkent, hosted by the British Embassy and the UK Department for Business and Trade. This key event brought together developers, architects, and government officials to discuss Uzbekistan’s ambitious urban transformation goals. Our Managing Partner, Jim Diggle, shared insights on how we can harness nature to regenerate cities, creating a sustainable future that balances urban growth with environmental responsibility. He was joined by Hakan Agca, Founder and Managing Director of Cross Works, to discuss the visionary New Tashkent masterplan, which is expanding the capital with a focus on integrated green infrastructure and human-centric design. The conference provided a valuable platform to learn about Uzbekistan’s vision for a more connected, resilient, and sustainable urban future. With a strong track record in delivering world-class masterplans and landscape-led design, Gillespies is excited to contribute to the region’s growth and looks forward to forging new partnerships in Uzbekistan and surrounding regions. #conference #uzbekistan #futurecities #sustainablecities #natureleddesign #gillespies

Exciting progress is being made at City Quays Gardens, with the project nearing completion! What was once a car park next to the historic Harbour Offices is now evolving into a vibrant 2-acre green space, central to Belfast Harbour's ambitious waterfront regeneration. This vibrant, sustainable public space is taking shape with lush greenery, flexible event lawns, 5G-enabled outdoor workspaces, and the striking illuminated ‘gateway nest.’ It’s all set to become a lively hub for relaxation, socialising, and community events—bringing people together to share meaningful experiences! It’s been an incredible journey to bring this vision to life, and we’ve been thrilled to collaborate with an amazing team on this transformative project. With AECOM serving as project manager, Gillespies has led the design team, responsible for masterplanning, landscape and public realm design, supported by a group of specialist expert designers. These include lighting designer StudioFractal and a range of Belfast-based consultancies, including RPS, Turley, Doran Companies, Consarc, WH Stephens and Semple & McKillop Consulting Engineers We can’t wait to see the community enjoy it for years to come! Stay tuned for the grand opening!
