Hundreds of thousands of new homes are being built without meeting the accessible and adaptable standard, despite the clear commitment from the previous government for change. As highlighted in this Inside Housing piece by Lord Best, the delay in implementing #M4(2) accessibility requirements is not just an oversight - it’s a missed opportunity to make homes fit for everyone, and it's a delay that is costing the public purse. 🚧 At Habinteg, we’re committed to promoting accessible housing for all, but we need action now from policymakers to ensure that every new home is designed for the diverse needs of our society. Great to see Shipley MP Anna Dixon raise an important question about disabled people living in inaccessible housing in today's Prime Minister's Questions! With one in three disabled renters in private housing living in inaccessible homes, we need to ensure the 1.5 million new homes being built are #accessible and #adaptable. Will Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner lead the way in making homes accessible for all? What do you think? Leave a comment below. ↓ Want to know more? Housing Executive Magazine covers the story here. ↓ #NewHousing #AccessibleHomes #ForAccessibleHomes
Habinteg’s Head of Development, Matthew Kelly, said: “Disabled people typically struggle for a long time to find suitable housing so I’m pleased that six of the properties in this new development are fully wheelchair accessible, and the other 12 are designed to be adaptable to people’s needs. “The scheme has delivered much-needed affordable, accessible homes to the neighbourhood. The great design by Acanthus WSM Architects has made a positive impact to the area by breathing new life into a building that wasn’t contributing to the community. For tomorrow's #InternationalWomensDay2025, we’re celebrating Habinteg tenant, Cathy Smith, for her work in driving tenant engagement and empowerment in our organisation. Cathy is the chair of our Joint Strategic Impact Group (JSIG), which influences how Habinteg works to support tenants at the highest level. She sees her role as JSIG chair as taking the emotion that tenants feel - whether it’s about repairs or planned work - and using it at a strategic level to drive change. Cathy joined JSIG after becoming a tenant representative for her Merseyside scheme. She has 40 years of experience in disability advocacy on local and national committees. A big shout out to Cathy and to all women in social housing today! Find out more about Cathy. → https://lnkd.in/eksrMH_9 #IWD2025 #AccessibleHousing #HousingForAll
