UK Aid-funded research programme to make transport safer, greener, more affordable and inclusive in Africa and Asia.
About us
The High Volume Transport (HVT) Applied Research Programme is the UK Government investment in updating vital transport research to reduce poverty and develop economies. HVT is also sharing it with authorities in low-income countries across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia so they can use it to make transport safer, greener, and more affordable, accessible and inclusive. Transport is key to economic development in low-income countries. It allows markets to move. It ensures economies move on and it helps people move up. It breathes life into the vital organs of society – local communities, workplaces, schools, hospitals, rural health centres and entrepreneurial opportunities. There is a pressing need to transform transport in low-income countries. Yet, there is a lack of applicable evidence to inform important investments in a rapidly changing climate and transport environment. The evidence base for huge investment decisions is often out of date and inadequate. HVT will close this gap by providing a new ecosystem of knowledge about sustainable transport development in low-income countries. We support policy, engineering and technical research to improve transport for all and reduce its impact on the environment. This research will support African and Asian countries to develop strategic, cost effective, safe, and low carbon passenger and freight transport. The HVT priority research areas include: • Climate mitigation and adaptation • Inclusion, gender, road safety • Policy and regulation • Technology and innovation • Fragile and conflict affected states • Research uptake and capacity building.

We were delighted to present HVT research on greener #electromobility at Urban Mobility India 2024. Panelists and participants at the ‘Standardising mobility systems in core areas of Indian cities’ session discussed low emission zones (#LEZ) and linkages to #inclusion and climate mitigation. Our thanks to Kalpana Viswanath for representing HVT and The Urban Catalysts for sharing the work on women's mobility and access in Indian cities implemented under the HVT #TTRIID programme. Read more about all our work on #climateresilience and #inclusion in transport in LICs on our website 👇 https://lnkd.in/dtPrnN29 #lowcarbontransport #climatemitigation #safemobilityforwomen #lowemissionzones

🙏 Many thanks to all the research teams for excellent presentations at our New Thinking For Tomorrow’s Transport webinar yesterday. Representatives from the four projects from #Africa funded by the Transport-Technology Research and Innovation for International Development (T-TRIID) programme presented #research into original ideas that could help in the shift towards #sustainable, safer, more inclusive #transport in African cities. 🌍 Michael Wanyama began with his project, 'Tackling Africa’s road safety and emissions from the source in #Uganda' addressing the problem of emissions from old, poorly maintained cars and the lack of available data about them . 🌏 Dmtsu Gebremariam Hagos presented 'Safety and Mobility Challenges of persons with disabilities in Mekelle city: Towards inclusive transport', a project aimed at providing improved infrastructure design and safer public transport in this Ethiopian city. 🌏 Integrated Transport Planning's Mark Dimond came next with 'Computer vision for transport data collection' from #SierraLeone. This project offers a low cost way of building up a picture of urban transport features using footage from dashcams and taxi drivers. 🌏 Timothy Durant of Vectos with Seun Sonoiki and Abdul Muizz Ogbara of Lamataonline presented 'Inclusive Interchanges', a project from #Nigeria addressing the role of interchanges in promoting safe, inclusive, low carbon mobility. The full webinar is now available to view on our YouTube channel here 👇 https://lnkd.in/ewBAJFZF #lowcarbontransport #innovationsintransport #TTRIID

❗️Transport innovations in Africa, webinar happening TOMORROW ❗️ There's still time to join us tomorrow (Thursday) for our webinar exploring #research into innovative ideas to make #transport more #sustainable, safe and inclusive in low-income countries in #Africa. Featured projects include ‘Inclusive Interchanges’ from Vectos (Part of SLR) who, with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (Lamataonline), developed a new interchange design brief for sub-Saharan African cities. This improved design incorporates new technologies which will lead to better integration of both formal and informal public transport services. And Integrated Transport Planning (ITP) will present a cheap, efficient way of collecting transport #data thanks to a new online tool. ‘Computer Vision for Public Transport’ uses data from many different sources such as dashcam footage from city buses and taxis, to see live transport issues in specific areas. The data is then plotted on a map creating an evidence-based picture, enabling local authorities to more effectively manage their transport systems. We’ll also be presenting original ideas from these original research projects: 🌏 Tackling Africa’s road safety and emissions from the source in #Uganda and 🌏 Safety and Mobility Challenges of persons with disabilities in Mekelle city: Towards inclusive transport from #Ethiopia. 📅 Thursday 24th October, 10am – 11.15am UK Register here to join this free webinar 👇 https://lnkd.in/eqhyGmFg #lowcarbontransport #transportfortomorrow #TTRIID

A fascinating article by Sonal Shah (She/ her) the Hindustan Times about bringing women into state policies around electric vehicles. Well worth a read.
How can we bring women in state EV policies? Sonal Shah (She/ her) outlines ways in which state EV policies can create an enabling environment to increase women's employment and uptake, using the Delhi EV Policy as an example. India is undergoing transformation in its mobility system, and the time for a gender equitable transition is now. We are very grateful to the entire research team: Manisha Sharma, Lakshmi Radhakrishnan, Sutanu Pati, Priyadarshi Singh, Namrata Daniels, Shradha Gupta, Adithya D. https://lnkd.in/gvmuH_Ye NITI Aayog | Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office | British High Commission in India| The Urban Catalysts | Haimanti Poddar

📣 🌍 Have you registered for our Asia webinar yet?? 🌍 📣 There's still time to sign up to join us for the first of a two-part series of webinars exploring new, original #research that could help in the push towards #sustainable, safe and inclusive transport in low-income countries in #Asia. Featured projects include ‘Gendered approaches for addressing adaptation capacity to hot weather conditions’, from the Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Programme(TRIPP)IIT Delhi. This work examines the travel patterns of #women commuters and explores their exposure to extreme heat. Its findings will enable improved #heatwave action plans to reduce the vulnerability of all genders while they travel. And from #Bangladesh, we’ll present new research into improved #roaddesign to accommodate three-wheeled vehicles, such as #rickshaws. This project, ‘Road design guidelines considering three-wheeler slow-moving vehicles for urban and rural roads of Bangladesh’ carried out by the Islamic University of Technology, could ensure that passengers and drivers of these very commonly used vehicles will be able to travel more comfortably, without risk of accident or injury. We'll also be presenting innovative ideas from these research projects👇 🌏 Freight Emissions Index for Heritage City of Ahmedabad, #India 🌏 Policy and Regulation for Motorcycle Taxi safety in #Nepal; 🌍 Safe and Secure Public Transport, India 📅 Tuesday 22nd October, 10 am UK Register here for one or both webinars 👇: https://lnkd.in/eqhyGmFg
