About us

Index Ventures partners with exceptional entrepreneurs – those with unique insight who are intrinsically driven to make their vision a reality. We help them turn their bold ideas into global businesses, and through the companies they build, have a long-lasting and positive impact on the world around us. Index-backed businesses are supported by an experienced team of investors, strategists, and an extensive global network built over three decades of startup investing. Working side-by-side through the scale up journey, we forge deep and long-lasting relationships with founders and their teams. The vast majority of these partnerships begin early in the company’s life, at Seed and Series A, and extend to IPO and beyond. Operating as one team, with feet firmly on both sides of the Atlantic – from London to Tel Aviv, and San Francisco to New York – we are an international team with a global mindset, with experience supporting founders wherever they emerge. When they succeed, they generate returns that in turn support Index’s investors, including non-profit foundations; education, healthcare and research endowments; and other impact-driven organizations.

Consumer demands are evolving faster than ever. For manufacturers, this puts a huge strain on R&D and procurement teams to build agile supply chains. Across consumer brands and industrial giants alike, teams are racing to act quickly to find the right suppliers to stock shelves on time and ship new products. For many, sourcing the raw materials necessary for popular products can be costly, complex and slow without the right help. Valdera is the AI-driven raw materials sourcing platform that’s transforming the supply chain for top beauty brands, industrial powerhouses and Fortune 500 companies. Here’s why we’re excited to lead its $15M Series A funding to support the company’s continued growth: 🧪 Chemicals alone are a $5 trillion industry. With a rapidly-evolving supply chain, traditional sourcing methods are no longer sufficient for many manufacturers. Valdera’s AI-powered platform is bringing a faster, sustainable, affordable and resilient tool in the hands of some of the world’s biggest brands. 🔨 Founded by siblings Sruti A. and Dheev Arulmani, Valdera’s platform combines proprietary AI & ML technology with real-time market data, making it the most extensive database of chemical and raw material suppliers. 🤝 Valdera’s platform has already delivered impressive value for its customers, shortening launch timelines by 30-40% and achieving an average cost savings of 14%. 👥 Index Partner Georgia Stevenson notes, “Sruti and Dheev are approaching this problem with a fresh perspective and deep empathy for customers.” Watch to learn more about Valdera and our investment:

With hundreds of software products at play in the typical enterprise, integrating AI across disparate systems can be a huge challenge requiring complex, purpose-built infrastructure. Connecting AI-powered workflows shouldn’t require building from scratch - so Thread AI's Lemma platform is stepping in. We’re excited to lead the company’s $6M seed funding as it launches from stealth. 🛠️ Built by former Palantir AI Product and Engineering leads Angela McNeal and Mayada Gonimah, Lemma allows enterprises to easily build scalable, secure, and robust workflows that span AI models, APIs, and applications, all in one platform. 🧵 Thread is already enabling businesses across a spectrum of industries to build powerful AI workflows. The new funds will be used to initiate an aggressive hiring plan and further expand its footprint. 🪡 Index Partner Shardul Shah explains the power of Thread’s platform to unite workflows: “By bringing together previously scattered systems, Lemma delivers value that could not be recognized otherwise." A big congratulations to Angela, Mayada and the entire Thread AI team! 🎉 https://lnkd.in/gYZcS8fB

Catch up on some key takeaways & lessons learned from Martin's conversation with Duolingo CTO & co-founder Severin Hacker at last week’s Europeans of New York event 👇

    Partner at Index Ventures

Two years ago, I moved from London to New York 🗽 to help launch Index Ventures office here. Part of the reason I moved here was to help more European founders launch in the US. So I started a community for founders called “Europeans of New York”. One of my favorite events we do are fireside chats with European entrepreneurs who’ve had incredible success in the US. Earlier this year, we had Olivier Pomel of Datadog. And last week was Severin Hacker of Duolingo. A few of my favorite moments from our conversation: 1️⃣ Severin has a mantra of “reduce, automate delegate” that’s part of the company’s operating model. In his words, “if you can’t reduce it, try to automate it. If you can’t automate it, then delegate it.” He applies this to his own calendar, getting ruthlessly honest about whether a meeting is worth his time, and even setting recurring meetings to expire at the end of the quarter. For engineering, it’s about removing anything from the app that isn’t critical. The only things left on your plate should be things that no one else can do. 2️⃣ His take on hiring and retaining the best talent. On hiring: Over and over again, Duolingo attracts talent that could work on Wall Street or for one of the big five tech companies. But they’re after a deeper mission and purpose… something those roles don’t offer. On retaining talent: “Take the long view” is one of Severin’s favorite Duolingo operating principles when it comes to hiring. That looks like… → Considering whether a candidate is the right fit for both the current role and the role the company envisions for them in four years → Hiring more generalists that can grow along with the company instead of specialists to fulfill a specific need that might go away in the future → Investing in hiring and onboarding new grads —even if it takes a year. Because that year of training will turn them into amazing team members → Hiring “missionaries” who believe in Duolingo’s mission over “mercenaries” who care more about which company will pay the most 3️⃣ In almost 13 years, Duolingo’s mission has never changed: “to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available”. In the early days of the company, Severin and Luis von Ahn needed to figure out how to monetize since charging for basic access would go against their mission. They started with a Spotify-style subscription to remove ads, but continued to iterate. Ultimately, they landed on a feature-based subscription with all content still available to everyone and some premium features available only to subscribers. That subscription model now accounts for 80% of Duolingo’s revenue. And I could go on with many more highlights from the evening but, if you’re a European founder based in NYC, the best thing is for you to join the next one - just say hi in the comments and I’ll add you. Thank you again Severin for being so generous with your time and wisdom.
