Wonderful to join our Institute of Hospitality members this week in my home county of Kent, where we, alongside Shepherd Neame, Britain’s oldest brewery, had the pleasure of celebrating Great British beer. This event was a fantastic opportunity to join our #HospitalityFamily across a total of 290 pubs, and to discuss both the significant challenges they face, and the exciting possibilities they see ahead. It was truly inspiring to hear how their commitment to training and development is paving the way for professional success, especially at a time when over 400 pubs have tragically closed their doors. Pubs are so much more than places to enjoy a pint; they’re the beating heart of countless communities. They provide a sense of belonging, and for some a route away from isolation. They are something to be celebrated, as is the incredible skill of the brewers that craft the beer, whilst vitally supporting the local economies that they serve. The #Hospitality sector suffers more than many from the problems caused by late and slow payment of invoices. Recent findings from the Institute of Hospitality reveal a growing challenge for the sector, with 71% of surveyed members reporting that, across the past 12 months, corporate customers are taking longer to settle their accounts. For hospitality businesses, predominantly SMEs relying on steady cash flow, this trend poses a serious threat to viability. Extended payment delays strain operational budgets, yet 65% of respondents feel trapped, fearing that tightening payment terms could drive customers away despite the financial burden of waiting longer for funds. Robert Richardson, FIH MI, CEO of the Institute of Hospitality commented on the findings told Good Business Pays "Quick settlement of accounts is critical for the industry; it ensures businesses can pay suppliers, staff, and overheads on time, maintaining stability in an already volatile market. As cash flow remains the lifeblood of SMEs, these findings highlight an urgent need for dialogue between hospitality providers and corporate clients to balance fair payment practices with sustaining vital business relationships." More than 25,000 jobs gone since October. Today the UK government had a chance to course correct on polices that have seen people pushed out of work, the disabled pushed closer to poverty, and stymied growth for one of the largest economic contributors to UK Plc, and they didn't take it. Confidence, growth, and opportunity, all down. I won't pretend times aren't hard, but hospitality is a resilient profession, and will rebuild, because our people are resourceful, hardworking, and determined to adapt, ensuring that this vital sector rises again to drive jobs, community, and economic strength despite the challenges ahead.
