Our project for Darwen Youth Centre has started on site this week! Located at the heart of the town, the steeply sloping site faces the Carnegie-funded Library Theatre. The new building will offer a flexible activity space, recording studio, gym, cafe and other activities to young people of the area. The building’s volume is articulated as a series of pitched roofs which define its image and reduce the apparent scale when viewed from streets further up the slope.

About us
We are an architectural studio creating places which are transformative to communities and our built heritage. The practice is working across the UK on civic, public and community buildings, as well as places of work, from our base in London. The studio was founded in 2014 with a competition-winning entry for the refurbishment of Preston’s Brutalist bus station, which reopened to the public in 2018 to critical acclaim, demonstrating the practice’s skill in delivering a technically challenging civic project which has secured the future of a Modernist icon. The studio - which is intentionally small, responsive, and agile - continues to specialise in the reimagining of existing buildings alongside new-build projects and is currently leading the retrofit of a Grade II Listed maltings in Grimsby town centre and the extension of a Grade II* Listed Charles Barry-designed church in Brighton. The practice has developed a long-term relationship with the charity OnSide, and, following the success of Legacy Croydon Youth Zone, is now delivering several youth centres across the UK. Balancing responsive design with a rigorous approach to construction, the practice prides itself on delivering good value to clients as well as producing highly functional buildings that serve the needs and expectations of those who will use them for years to come. Projects are designed with simplicity and clarity, combined with joy and warmth – qualities expressed in the hand drawings and physical models that form a key part of the practice’s working process. The work of the practice has received a number of awards including the international 2021 World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize, the 2022 Civic Trust Special Award for Reuse and Adaptation, as well as national and regional awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Institute for Historic Building Conservation and the Royal Town Planning Institute. "It was more than just a transit hub; it was a social nucleus, a place where every meeting felt like the start of something exciting and unforgettable." The Preston Bus Station is recently featured in The Guardian article by Jem Bartholomew, titled "After The Brutalist: Our Readers Name Their Favourite Brutalist Buildings". We are proud to have worked on the building's refurbishment, with a primary focus on enhancing its contribution to the community. It has been an exciting week on site in Preston, with the structural frame being erected for the new Preston Youth Zone building. The project is a particularly special one for our practice as the site opens onto the new public square created as part of our refurbishment of the Grade-II Listed Preston Bus Station building. The large improved-section beams shown in the photographs will support the Sports Hall above an internal kick-pitch. OnSide Vault, Preston Youth Zone Triton Construction - with you at every stage_

Our refurbishment of the Grade-II Listed St Leonard’s Church in Hove is recently featured in the Architects’ Journal by Fran Williams.
