We are proud to endorse and support BGP Offshore's Empowering Nigeria through BGP Oceans: Training for Marine Fauna Observers (MFOs) and Passive Acoustic Monitoring Operators (PAMOs) initiative! Designed specifically for Nigerians. This program is aimed at training local talent from Marine Biology, Oceanography or related backgrounds in marine fauna monitoring techniques for the offshore industry. At the MMOA we are proud to offer each trainee a one-year associate membership free, to further support their career development. BGP Offshore are hosting a FREE webinar on November 14th at 19h (WAT) where you can learn about the offshore energy industry, offshore life, and how YOU can be part of the effort to protect marine ecosystems. Our member, Gordon Foot MNM FNI, recently took the socials to highlight the work of the MMOA. Thank you for showcasing our work and noting the work of our voluntary committee, who aim to create a community and support marine mammal professionals across sectors and the globe! Not one to sit still, in September 2025 Gordon will canoe/paddle over 100km down the Zambezi River and then white water raft through the 25 Grade 5 rapids of the Batoka Gorge known as the ‘Terminator’ ending up at Victoria Falls. This trip is self-funded and he aims to donate funds to his two chosen charities; Sailors' Society' – www.sailors-society.org Safer Waves – www.saferwaves.org Take a look at his journey and fundraising page here: https://lnkd.in/etdG9wuR Thanks again Gordon and good luck on your endeavour! #giveback #seafarersupport #discriminationatsea #maritimewelfare
⚓Inspiring the Maritime⚓ This will be my journey for the next 11 months as my fundraiser ‘Zambezi River Challenge 2025’ gains momentum as I seek donations and attempt to enthral you with those people and organisations that have inspired me or are inspirations in themselves. So here I am going to highlight a special kind of association. This association is a very small community who have the seas and oceans at their heart but more importantly the mammals who call this water their home. They engage with all those within the Marine Mammal Observer - Passive Acoustic Monitoring - Protected Species Observers and research community. One of the awesome things that they do is to professionalise their community and raise the profile of what these people do both in a professional, academic, watchkeeping and sustainability way. They also support and empower early careers professionals through events by seeking support from successful well known and established institutes such as the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) - https://lnkd.in/e_GwDivE, who in turn run programs such as Sea Your Future - https://lnkd.in/eF_QEbHJ Supporting trainees, students, apprentices and cadets through their qualifications and for those starting out in their careers. These men and women of the MMOA are all volunteers providing their time and effort freely and giving back to their community - Why not join them, why not be part of something, invest in yourself and your planets future 😁⚓They may be small but they dare to dream big !! This endeavour is all about two fantastic maritime charities very dear to my heart. They are also two of the smaller charities and very much underfunded. 🍵 Just the price of a coffee or a cup of tea – All the multitude of pennies will soon add up and be put towards doing great things for seafarers. Sailors' Society and Safer Waves really do need our kind assistance, lets show them that we are all there for them. ⌚Please find the 1 minute to read the story by clicking on the JustGiving link here. Dream big and go for it ! 👇🏻🛶⚓ THANK YOU ! https://lnkd.in/eKTWaUVe Take a look at this MMO Association community, they may be small but they have a massive impact and maybe they can inspire you on your journey 👇🏻 https://lnkd.in/ekFq4its

Our chair, Ashleigh Kitchiner has published a blog reflecting on the first Marine Mammal Mitigation and Monitoring conference hosted by the Marine Mammal Observer Association and Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) and the benefits of attending such conferences, particularly as an early-career professional. She currently sits as the co-chair of the See Your Future group at IMarEST where they aim to support early-career professionals or career movers into their new marine careers. Ashleigh mentions that these conferences are a great resource for early-career professionals, providing opportunities to connect with industry leaders, gain practical insights, and build strong professional networks. A special thanks to Matthew Duffy, a member of the MMOA and delegate at the conference, for contributing his insights. As Matthew noted, “It’s easy to feel disconnected when you’re just starting out, but attending these events makes you realise you’re part of a much larger community. Meeting experts face-to-face and hearing their insights firsthand has been both motivating and incredibly valuable for my own career path.” For anyone looking to expand their expertise and network, industry events like this offer valuable learning and growth opportunities. ! #MMOA #IMarEST #Marinemammals #Earlycareerprofessionals #marinecareers #Networking #IMarESTSYF
New Blog📖: Empowering early-career professionals through events: Promoting marine careers is a key activity for the IMarEST, and we set up Sea Your Future to encourage students, graduates, apprentices, and cadets to engage with professional development opportunities. Here, the group’s co-chair, Ashleigh Kitchiner shares her experience of the power of events when it comes to inspiring the next generation.👨🎓👩🏫👷♂️ Full blog👉ow.ly/V0If50TSCJZ #IMarESTSYF #IMarESTBlog #EarlyCareers #IMarEST

Please help support one of our members Gordon Foot MNM FNI in his latest charity venture! Great work Gordon :)
This #WorldMaritimeDay, Gordon Foot MNM FNI FIIRSM is kicking off a charity campaign, the Zambezi River Challenge, to raise money for Sailors' Society and Safer Waves. In September 2025, Gordon will canoe more than 100km down the Zambezi River, the fourth-longest river in Africa, and white water raft through the 25 Grade 5 rapids of the Batoka Gorge (known as the ‘Terminator’), ending up at Victoria Falls on a 10-day expedition. All donations will go towards his two chosen charities. Drawing on his 40 years in submarines and the merchant navy in the offshore industry, Gordon aims to inspire others with his story as he celebrates his 60th birthday. In 2023, he ascended Mount Kilimanjaro, raising £14,000 for charity. Gordon said: “In the run up to IIRSM’s 50th anniversary and my own 60th birthday, I was thinking about how IIRSM inspired me, and how I can try to inspire others. My campaign will endeavour to encourage a broadening of horizons, a better understanding of careers at sea, and to help people think more openly about sustainability and our oceans within the blue economy.” To donate, visit: https://lnkd.in/etdG9wuR

Congratulations again, ESB, on launching another opportunity to support marine mammal monitoring and mitigation. It is excellent to see offshore renewable developers championing these initiatives, and it is wonderful to see the UN Ocean Decade endorsement. #UNOceanDecade #Careers #SupportingIslandCommunities #MMO #OffshoreWind #Shetland
Our latest ESB-funded Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) Training Initiative, in collaboration with UHI Shetland, is taking place this week in Scalloway, Shetland. This programme has been officially recognised and endorsed by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) – UN Ocean Decade. The endorsement highlights our initiative's important role in the #OceanDecadeChallenges. The UN Ocean Decade seeks to generate the knowledge needed to reverse the decline of the ocean system, driving forward new opportunities for the sustainable development of the marine ecosystem. #ESBNetZeroFuture
