🌍 We were pleased to welcome Mark McAllister, Chair of Ofgem, and a delegation from Ofgem to our world-leading FutureGrid site.
FutureGrid is our testing facility to demonstrate the transformative potential of transporting hydrogen in our gas transmission assets for use across the economy. The visit marked the publication of our closure report on the success of Phase 1 of the project.
At National Gas, we are strongly aware of the important role we must play in the transition to net zero and a clean energy future. That’s why we wanted to, safely and securely, demonstrate the potential of transporting hydrogen in gas transmission assets. Hydrogen, as a cleaner alternative to natural gas, presents us with an opportunity to meet the demands of energy usage and net zero.
With thanks to Ofgem, DNV and our partners Northern Gas Networks, Fluxys, The University of Edinburgh and Durham University, who we worked with to create FutureGrid, a site that runs real life trials to prove the possibility of transporting hydrogen using repurposed gas transmission assets.
We are thrilled to announce that Phase 1 of testing was a success. We tested running a 2% blend of hydrogen with natural gas, all the way up to 100% hydrogen. Our tests were successful, highlighting the potential to transport blends of 2%, 5%, 20% and 100% hydrogen.
As we continue to meet the energy needs of today, we also look to future possibilities, and aim to realise our ambitions on delivering a clean energy future.
