As we move forward with the refurbishment at the Pipe Factory, we're excited to share more behind-the-scenes insights into our design process. The window replacement was carefully considered to balance heritage preservation and energy efficiency improvement. The current single-glazed windows need replacing to improve thermal performance of the building. We’ve studied the building’s history, including its sister building around the corner at 28 Bain Street which was once included in the original Pipe Factory complex, and the retrieved window samples, which were removed in 2015, to create historically accurate window details. We aimed to retain and reuse as much of the original materials as possible, like concrete upstands and lead flashing. We are thrilled to be working once again with The University of Edinburgh on an inspiring project; providing permanent outdoor learning facilities on two beautiful sites in Central Scotland. The initiative is borne out of the University’s Forest and Peatland programme; to create woodland and improve open habitats in order to mitigate carbon emissions from unavoidable travel while benefitting nature. The facilities will also enhance educational opportunities, promote environmental awareness, and support the well-being and opportunities to learn for local communities, students, and faculty. We are thrilled to see the growing momentum behind The Laundry project as featured on the front page of todays The Herald Scotland newspaper and the BBC News Website.   Studio Directors Jennifer O'Donnell and Michael Dougall FRIAS, along with Darren Wilson of White Arkitekter, attended a presentation of the project at Easterbrook Hall on The Crichton Estate on Friday. The event provided the opportunity for our team to present an update on the project as we work towards concluding RIBA Stage 1. These initial stages of the project, which have been funded by the South of Scotland Enterprise, have helped set the project brief and establish the key objectives around; saving heritage, protecting the environment, inclusion, access and participation, and organisational sustainability.   Time has also been spent during RIBA Stage 1 to interrogate the existing Merrick Building to maximise the re-use potential and develop a clear deep retrofit strategy for the building. Graduate founded O'DonnellBrown has partnered with Stirling Prize-winning practice Mikhail Riches and have been selected as finalists for the 'C40 Cities Glasgow' competition to regenerate Glasgow's Canalside in the north of the city The project, which is being led by C40 Cities, Scottish Canals, and Glasgow City Council, has an ambition to create a new zero carbon, sustainable, and resilient community around the historic Applecross Wharf on the Forth and Clyde Canal. We are progressing conservation and repair proposals for three significant buildings in Girvan as part of the Girvan Regeneration project. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at our research process to date. In collaboration with our design team, Fiona Sinclair, Narro, Harley Haddow, and Armour Construction Consultants, we are focusing on three Grade B-listed buildings: Stumpy Tower – a key town landmark, the McKechnie Institute & Museum, and 14-18 Dalrymple Street. We carried out detailed surveys to understand the current condition of each building's fabric. Alongside this work Statements of Significance were produced for each building assessing the importance of certain building elements and how historical changes have impacted their heritage value. Currently, we’re reviewing all the data we’ve gathered - including site visit notes, survey results, and photogrammetry models - to create elevation drawings and map out the necessary repairs. This work will form the basis of costed proposals to support future funding applications.
