It's the 75th Anniversary of the World Town Planning Day! This year celebrates the theme of 'Homes Start with Planning'. This theme looks at the role of Planners and planning in delivering housing that meets the needs of our communities and in helping create sustainable solutions for all 🏘 In the UK, this has been manifestly failing. We have a housing crisis with low levels of supply and affordability which are affecting quality of life, the economy and mental wellbeing. Increased housing targets adds pressure on councils to help boost housebuilding and approve more applications, often in the face of local opposition. But will increasing these mandatory targets and proposed changes to the planning system help resolve the most acute housing crisis in living memory? It was great attending the 13th edition of Education Estates Conference on Tuesday. We started the day by attending the jmarchitects drop-in breakfast at Albert Schloss ☕️ 🥐 It was great to catch up with some familiar faces and meet new people. The exhibition showcased some of the most innovative solutions around and an awards ceremony celebrating excellence in the sector. The event focused on educational infrastructure, the funding, design, build, maintenance and management of schools, colleges and universities. The conference itself was very interesting in providing the latest information, valuable insights and best practice examples. Speakers discussed every stage of the project life cycle, from policy makers, planners, architects, project managers, construction professionals, estate directors and operational teams. It was a great opportunity to explore the exhibition and to hear about the new and inspiring developments different companies had to offer, which put a lot in perspective for us as planners in how we approach the development of such facilities for current and future students.
