PAPYRUS is the leading UK charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.

About us

PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is the UK charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people. Suicide is the biggest killer of people aged 35 and under in the UK. We believe that suicide is preventable. PAPYRUS exists to reduce the number of young people who take their own lives, by shattering the stigma surrounding suicide and equipping young people and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond to emotional distress. We believe that no young person should have to struggle alone with thoughts of suicide. Our suicide prevention helpline, HOPELINE247 is staffed by trained suicide prevention advisers, who work with young people – and anybody concerned for a young person – to help keep them safe from suicide. HOPELINE247 is a free and confidential call, text and email service, which is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year (weekends and bank holidays included). We deliver our suicide prevention education and training packages to thousands of people each year, to create suicide-safer communities across the UK. PAPYRUS envisions a society which speaks openly about suicide and has the resources to help young people who have suicidal thoughts. No young person should have to suffer alone with thoughts or feelings of hopelessness, and nobody should have to go through the heartbreak of losing a young person to suicide. Everyone can play a role in preventing young suicide.

  • Talking about suicide not only reduces the stigma but can also help someone struggling to seek help and rethink their options. It is safer to ask about suicide than to avoid the conversation. Language around suicide does need to be approached sensitively. Asking someone if they’re having suicidal thoughts can give them the space to tell you how they feel and let them know they are not a burden. For advice on how to safely open conversations about suicide, visit the PAPYRUS website. 💜

    • Talking about suicide does not make it more likely to happen.

  • In our latest Supporter Story, Ailidh talks about her experience living with suicidal thoughts and how she found HOPE after two strangers saved her life. Ailidh wanted to share her story to thank these strangers for what they did for her, but also to show anyone in a similar situation, that one day, you will be thankful for being you and find that HOPE. Read Ailidh's story on the PAPYRUS blog now: https://lnkd.in/ezXgy5Z3

  • Since extending HOPELINE247 to a 24/7 service last year, demand has surged. In 2024 alone, we had 12,000 life-saving interactions during the night and saw a 66% increase in the number of young people seeking help through our webchat service... These numbers tell us how vital our work is, but rising costs and a sharp decline in donations across the charity sector have brought us to a critical moment. Hope can't wait until the morning... help HOPELINE247 save young lives all throughout the night and please donate to our emergency appeal today. 💜 https://lnkd.in/e5fMyhZT

  • Every 3 minutes, our advisers support someone reaching out for suicide prevention advice. But right now, due to unprecedented financial pressures, we're facing challenges in continuing to provide our lifeline to young people through the night. Help us be there for young people when they need us the most. Let's keep HOPELINE 24/7. Donate to our emergency appeal today. Thank you.💜 https://lnkd.in/e5fMyhZT

  • If you're on a waiting list for physical or mental health support, and this is having a negative impact or causing you to experience thoughts of suicide, our HOPELINE247 advisers have guidance on ways to find more support in the meantime. Please know that support is available for you. If you're experiencing thoughts of suicide, we're always here to give personal, confidential support to help you stay safe for now: call 0800 068 4141, text HOPE to 88247, or email pat@papyrus-uk.org. 💜

  • 💭 DISTRACTION TECHNIQUES When experiencing thoughts of suicide, it can be helpful to try and use distraction techniques as part of your plan to stay safe. Distractions can bring focus to something else which can help quieten those thoughts. Everybody responds differently to distractions. What works for one person, may not work for someone else. This document can be used as a starting point to explore the types of distractions that can be helpful for you when managing thoughts of suicide. Some examples of distraction techniques are: PHYSICAL DISTRACTIONS 💜 Go outdoors – take your pet if you have one. 💜 Dance around and burn some energy in the process. 💜 Play with a stress toy or ball your socks up and throw them at a wall. 💜 Sit in the garden, outside in the park or on a beach and listen to the sounds of nature. CREATIVE DISTRACTIONS 💜 Try drawing, painting or colouring – mindfulness colouring books are available in most shops. 💜 Start a blog and write about how you get through difficult times to help others. 💜 Try cooking or baking a new recipe. 💜 Make a HOPEBOX. PRODUCTIVE DISTRACTIONS 💜 Make a to-do list for your day or your week. 💜 Rearrange your wardrobe or organise your drawers. 💜 Have a clear out of stuff you don’t need anymore – perhaps donate it to charity. 💜 Go shopping and treat yourself to something nice. SOOTHING DISTRACTIONS 💜 Use your favourite bubble bath or shower gels and have a long bath or shower. 💜 Wrap yourself in a blanket or layer up in jumpers and hoodies. 💜 Watch your favourite childhood film or something you may have been wanting to see. 💜 Switch off all your technology and take time for yourself.
