Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) is a world-leading research organization, and registered charity, undertaking pioneering marine research for the benefit of us all. The ocean and seas are essential to every one of us. They regulate weather and climate, produce oxygen for us to breathe, provide food, chemicals and energy, and support our economies by providing employment in many sectors including transport, tourism, fishing, energy and biotechnology. Our research is a unique combination of observation, experimentation, modelling activities and socio-economic expertise, which together provides a greater understanding of the dynamic and complex marine environment. Topics we cover range from carbon dioxide capture and storage to marine plastics. In addition, we have a commercial trading subsidiary, PML Applications Ltd, which delivers services, products and solutions related to the marine environment in key sectors such as ballast water management, biofouling, and satellite applications. Dear colleagues. Please can you help us? Are you the proud owner of a long-term time series that is showing a decadal trend in a biological observation? GREAT ! Would you be keen to put that time series to use in helping us explore the impacts of ocean acidification on marine organisms and ecosystems? FANTASTIC !! READ ON......... On 1st October 2024, the project "Ocean Acidification - Proof of Concept for New Research Strategies," generously supported by the Velux Foundation via the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, was launched. This project aims to identify biological indicators that, when combined with environmental observations, including carbonate chemistry, will allow us to observe and compare the rate and severity of biological changes in response to ocean acidification. To achieve this we need to build a global data resource that will contain a wide variety of different long-term biological time series. If these come with corresponding oceanographic data, primarily pH, total alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), or pCO₂, so much the better. And we need your help to do this. 🌊 OARS is proud to be featured in the new UN Ocean Decade report. Find us on page 15! Our seven working groups set out to provide guidance and support to stakeholders around the world on how to reduce the impacts of ocean acidification. OARS is working on identifying the data and evidence needs for both local and global mitigation and adaptation strategies. We then communicate these to the scientific and science policy community to take support science based action.
