I can trace my journey into structural engineering via the Pyrmide du Louvre. It was a key signpost for me, that caught my attention during the summer of 1991. I was almost 17. It was at the tail end of being built and I was in Paris, being immersed in the language for my upcoming French A Level. A fascination of wondering how this huge transparent thing was held up by tiny steel rods sort of tied up the ‘what shall I do at university?’ question. So to be asked 33 years later to exhibit our work in the British Ambassador’s residence down the road from the pyramid made this a special week. Especially considering the company we were in. Some of the UK’s best architecture and engineering practices. It’s a privilege to exhibit work anywhere, let alone on behalf of the government in such surroundings and amongst your peers. Thanks for the team at the British embassy in Paris for organising it and to Katherine Chimenes and Alessandro Milani for all the detailed work they put into organising our end of it. We made strucural OSB plinths with BlokBuild and also to David Kohn for sharing the stand with us and being great company over the two days. It’s been a crazy week from packing the van with models on Monday night at the office, a 4am dash to the Channel Tunnel, Katherine and I lugging plinths through the residence and to writing this now as I am waiting to go back under the English Channel with some new people met and old friends caught up with. We’ve made exhibitions of engineering since 2005 and we always get completely into doing it ourselves. They feel like opportunities to reflect on why we do what we do and how we do the exhibitions - making them ourselves with our gloves on and drills out reflects how we think and work. We can’t help building them ourselves. We want to understand and make and build every bit.

With constant changes happening within the built environment industry, it becomes increasingly important to continue to adapt and innovate. Price & Myers is excited to announce that Partner, Anna Wai, and Structural Engineer, Katherine Chimenes are joining the 2025 NLA Expert Panels. Anna will be part of Innovation Districts, focusing on the design and delivery of spaces for the science, tech and innovation sectors, and Katherine will be in the Built Environment Technology panel, exploring how technology can contribute to create a better city. #NLAInnovationDistricts #NLABuiltEnvironmentTech

Rochdale Town Hall is a finalist for the Greater Manchester Chamber, UK Building of the Year Award 2024, a recognition which highlights the project's contribution to Greater Manchester in terms of construction and development. We're delighted to have worked alongside a great design team on this remarkable project. 📷: James Newton

Curious about what makes for a great co-working space? Next month, you can join an exclusive tour of Beehive Lofts in Ancoats (where our Manchester studio is based!), hear from owner Steven Hanton about creating standout spaces and learn how the UK NZC Buildings Standard can shape office design. This event is in collaboration with the British Council for Offices and is open to members and non-members. Book your place here: https://ow.ly/XpFB50UHFPV

Collaboration is at the heart of great design. This RIBA Journal of De Matos Ryan’s most valued collaborators, features P&M founder Sam Price and Partner, Andy Toohey. The piece highlights how thoughtful, collaborative working between engineers and architects can result in innovative solutions that combine practicality with great design. Thank you, De Matos Ryan Architects. The feeling is mutual! Read more here: https://ow.ly/mWw250Uv4ec 📷: Young V&A, Hufton + Crow

After a few years of digital cards, we have gone back to making a small edition of real ones. From sitting down in the autumn to come up with an idea – usually based around one of our projects - to the hectic yet creative rush at the end of November to get it made, we do enjoy it. This year we have reflected on 30 years of working in and around Royal Observatory Greenwich, and our laser cutter has once again not let us down. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all at Price & Myers.

After over 5 years of meticulous calculating and collating we are genuinely thrilled to announce that our embodied carbon database has reached an impressive milestone: 600 calculations completed! 👏 A massive thank you and well done to our talented engineers for the commitment and hard work that made this possible. This data has formed the basis of cross-industry targets for structural embodied carbon over the past few years, including the recently published Net-Zero Carbon Building Standard, and we are proud to continue to take the lead in sharing this. But the real highlight? An initial analysis of the data is showing a reduction in embodied carbon across our designs. We will continue to analyse this as we complete our collection for 2024. Stay tuned in the new year, where we will be publishing the next version of our database as well as a comprehensive and honest assessment of where we think we have got to in relation to our targets and where we need to go. 📷: The Structural Engineer, July 2020
