The immortalisation of food-relevant cell lines is currently one of the most pressing challenges in cellular agriculture (Gouveia, 2022). Immortalised cells allow for unlimited cell expansion from the same source, inferring high consistency without the need for repeated animal biopsies. Despite work on immortal cell lines beginning over 50 years ago, there are very few immortal cell lines from species and cell types suitable for cultured meat. Immortalisation can come with disadvantages including propensity for genetic drift and additional mutations which lead to unexpected cell properties. At Quest we are working on a novel, bioengineering solution. One that enables controlled cell immortalisation with improved genetic stability during cell expansion. Resulting in increased consistency and safety.
