🤔 Did you know qubits have a ‘soft side’?   With our collaborators at Delft University of Technology, we demonstrated the positive impact of using all the data (both hard and soft) coming from a qubit to enhance quantum error correction.   🔟 Typically, quantum decoders rely only on ‘hard’ digitised measurement outcomes – 0s and 1s – and ignore the valuable information embedded in the analogue ‘soft’ measurement signal.   📈This information provides insight into the likelihood of a measurement error having occurred and thus can be used by the quantum decoder to improve its performance.    🤝Using Delft’s 17-qubit superconducting quantum computer, we saw an improvement in the extracted logical error rate, a measure of the error correction performance, with the use of soft information.     💥 While this improvement is limited at the moment, as quantum computers scale then the benefits of using soft information will become more pronounced, especially as we move from memory experiments to logical operations.   Check out the paper, now available in Physical Review Applied: https://lnkd.in/ey2UC4Mu And a previous blog post from the team also explains the implications of this paper for QEC: https://lnkd.in/ehQ_akxz   #quantumcomputing | #quantumerrorcorrection

⚪️ Different qubit types have different strengths and weaknesses. Some have fast response times but operate at near 0K temperatures. Others have unmatched stability and high gate fidelities but long gate operation times, and some have limited connectivity.    📈 One universal factor is that every qubit type has increased in number and improved on error rates over the last two decades, approaching a ‘practical QEC threshold’ of around 99.9% fidelity (i.e. an error rate of 10^-3) for two-qubit gates. ‘The system size and gate fidelities are just now crossing the threshold required for error correction... the interesting phase for quantum computing is just starting.’ – Jan Goetz, co-CEO and co-Founder at IQM Quantum Computers.  You can find out more about 'the three nines' and recent progress towards useful quantum computing by signing up to receive The Quantum Error Correction Report 2024: https://lnkd.in/eDMutzbB  ( 🔜 Due for release in late October!)   #quantumcomputing | #QEC | #quantumerrorcorrection | #TheQECReport2024

Quantum error correction (QEC) is essential to achieving the accuracy needed for quantum computers to realise their full potential. ⚡ While the field has seen promising progress with demonstrations of early QEC experiments, scalable, real-time quantum error decoding must be implemented on hardware to overcome the critical ‘backlog’ problem. The backlog problem occurs when qubit errors aren’t detected fast enough and build up in a quantum computer, slowing down and eventually stopping the computation. 💥     In a new experiment, the Riverlane team demonstrated that our quantum error decoder - the heart of our core product, the ‘QEC Stack’ - can avoid the backlog problem even on superconducting hardware with the strictest speed requirements.    By integrating a scalable FPGA decoder with the control system of Rigetti’s Computing’s superconducting quantum processor, we observed the following: • An 8-qubit stability experiment with up to 25 decoding rounds and a mean decoding time per round of less than 1 microsecond.  • Logical error suppression as the number of decoding rounds increased.  • A decoding response time of just 9.6 microseconds for nine measurement rounds. In other words, the world’s first low-latency QEC experiment! 🥇   💡 This experiment paves the way for more than just keeping logical qubits alive—it sets the stage for complex operations like lattice surgery and magic state teleportation, both crucial for building fault-tolerant, useful quantum computers. 🔗 Read more about this experiment on arXiv here: https://lnkd.in/eWKz_QVp
