We believe language matters in conversations about road deaths and injuries. We are calling on the media and authorities to stop using the word ‘accident’. Download our campaign pack here: https://buff.ly/4eU2PfQ It’s a crash, not an accident. End the language of denial.

We would like to offer a huge and heartfelt THANK YOU to all the wonderful runners who took on the challenge of running the Royal Parks and Oxford half marathons on behalf of RoadPeace. Every time someone chooses to raise money for us it helps to make our message louder and supports us to help those affected by road death and injury. Every bit of fundraising makes a difference. Thank you 👏

A small charity, founded by the bereaved and the outraged, our first priority has always been supporting victims. But to RoadPeace, support includes campaigning against society’s tolerance of road death, injury and road danger. Our members want to see lessons learned from their loss. They want to believe that their loved ones did not die in vain. They want to see others spared their suffering. This means both fewer victims and an improved response by the justice system to deaths and injuries. Most focus on the former with injury prevention. RoadPeace is unusual in its concentration on the post-crash response by the justice system. And change has started. WHO included justice-related activities in their Global Road Safety Plan. Pillar 5 Post Crash Response contains actions related to investigation, civil compensation, support services, and calls for an effective legal response and justice for the bereaved and injured.

The question posed by a budding young rural driver is a reasonable one: “it’s my car - why should an under 21 not be allowed in? in BBC News BBC We need to do so much better at engaging with, chatting with and understanding the concerns of young people. Many of us could provide a coherent answer to her question, but that is not my point here. Whilstever mobility trumps safety, we will continue to lose the argument. #GDL saves lives, but we haven’t yet persuaded enough people - including Department for Transport (DfT), United KingdomLilian Greenwood The Labour Party, the Prime Minster or Louise Haigh. Plea to BBC News - please stop putting the safety of young people against the safety of older people - it really works against safety for all road users. It is not one intervention vs another … framing it like this is really unhelpful. Language matters. The word 'accident' suggests something unintentional, and beyond control. Use of the term ‘accident’ is inappropriate until all the facts of the case are known. Crashes are commonly referred to as accidents, but that doesn’t mean we have to continue using this language. Planes and trains do not have ‘accidents’ - they crash. Changing language is vital to change attitudes.

Fantastic to see the inspirational Sharron Huddleston back on BBC Breakfast this morning, calling for the urgent introduction of a Graduated Driving Licensing system in the UK. Had this law been in place in 2017, it could have saved the life of her beautiful daughter, Caitlin 💔 It’s amazing to have such support for GDL from key organisations like The AA, RoadPeace, Brake, the road safety charity, Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety, National Police Chiefs' Council, RAC Foundation, The Road Safety Trust and so many others, who are all convinced that it would save countless lives on our roads. #GraduatedDrivingLicensing #GDL Lilian Greenwood Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom Dr Ian Greenwood Chris Taylor

Since the first World Day of Remembrance in 1993, at least 36.8 million people have been killed in road traffic crashes worldwide. This staggering number is a stark reminder of the ongoing crisis on the world’s roads. World Day of Remembrance was started by Brigitte Chaudhry, the founder of RoadPeace. The initiative began with several church services across the UK in 1993 and 1994 and it quickly gained traction worldwide. By 1995, through the efforts of Brigitte and the European Federation of Road Traffic Victims, organisations globally agreed to commemorate road victims on the third Sunday of November every year. This day is a global opportunity to honour the millions of people who have been killed or seriously injured in road crashes and to support the families and communities left to cope with the aftermath. This year it falls on Sunday, November 17.
