Massive thanks to Mather Jamie for the invite to their annual basketball tournament last week at the Mattioli Arena - home of the Leicester Riders! Rodgers Leask Ballers returned to defend their title from last year - coached by Riders rookie guard Jaylin Hunter. Our captain Peter Sparham led the team comprising Leah Bingham-Frost, Corey Johnson, Harriett Cundy, Lorna Hutchinson, Stewart Friel, Bethany Fear, Dylan Brereton, Kriston Harvey and Dylan Harvey. The team progressed to the final, which was a close game against Roythornes Solicitors requiring overtime to settle the result!! Rodgers Leask Ballers just took it on the buzzer to retain the trophy! 🏆 Congratulations to all teams that took part on the night - it was once again a really enjoyable event played in good spirit. #workhardplayhard #basketball #builtenvironment #constructionindustry #networking

To celebrate World Wetlands Day, we spoke to our Regional Director Dave Bathurst for his thoughts on the event. "World Wetlands Day is celebrated each year on 2nd February, which marks the date in 1971 when representatives from 18 different nations met in the Iranian seaside resort of Ramsar to sign a treaty on Wetlands of International Importance. The convention was organised by Eskandar Firouz, an Iranian environmentalist who championed the formation of his country’s first Department of Environment and developed its Ecological Conservation and Management Program which is still in force to this day. Here are some key facts to explain the importance of wetlands, and why an international day has been dedicated to them: - Wetlands are among the world’s most diverse productive environments. - They are the most threatened of all ecosystems, 64% have disappeared since the beginning of the last century. - Wetlands cover just 6% of the Earth’s land surface but 40% of all plant and animal species live or breed in them. - They can store 50 times more carbon than rain forests. - The UK has the most number of designated Ramsar sites in the world with 175. In an effort to mitigate climate change 45 countries and the European Union have committed to The Freshwater Challenge, which is a worldwide initiative to restore 186,411 miles of degraded river and more than 864 million acres of degraded wetlands by 2030. The theme for 2025 is “Wetlands and Human Wellbeing”. The emphasis this year on human wellbeing might seem selfish given how important they are to plants and animal species, but according to WWF between 300 and 400 million people in the world live close to and depend on wetlands so they are clearly very important to human welfare. In 2002 I was a Resident Engineer on a Ramsar site near Sittingbourne in Kent. I was overseeing the installation of flood control measures that would allow an important access road and branch railway line to remain open whilst maintaining water levels in the adjacent wetland areas. Some 12 years later wetlands are prevalent in my career once again. This time because they are being used as an effective natural method of mitigating the effects of excess nutrients in our waterways. These excess nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus lead to a damaging impact on freshwater habitats and estuaries, so in some cases wetlands are being created as part of the drainage system for new developments to restore water quality. Next time you see an area that resembles a swamp, don’t dismiss it as an unkempt wasteland. It may well be harbouring a delicately balanced ecosystem that is cleansing our water systems and decarbonising our environment".

As we hit the ground running for the year ahead, we’re taking a moment to reflect on some of the great work our teams were involved in at the end of 2024, in our quarterly newsletter. Q4 saw us kick off the festive season by raising nearly £500 for Save the Children International and catching up with colleagues and partners at the annual Derby Interact Christmas lunch. We also saw fantastic growth during the final few months of 2024, with our Bristol office welcoming principal structural engineer Tom Holmes, and the team showcasing its new multi-disciplinary offering through work on the Cotswold Canals Connected scheme, restoring the ‘missing mile’ of Stroudwater Navigation.
